i'm a nurse too and i realize that it's not as easy to get involved when you have a job that you're either working nights or really effing early in the morning and almost never get any weekends or holidays off.
Just keep searching, something will pop up that fits in your schedule. You're in NYC, the amount of stuff that's happening there must be staggering. If necessary, rearrange your shift to attend something. Give them enough advance notice and they should be okay with it, especially if it's just switching a shift, not asking for time off.
It takes a lot of time and effort, keep at it and just enjoy yourself. Make friends, learn lots of stuff, take classes, read books....make a conscious effort.
Don't expect Miss Perfect Mistress to miraculously appear without any effort on your part. It doesn't happen that way, sadly.
