Okay, i took my doll collection from my moms over thanksgiving which consists of dolls from all over the world.  I personally don't think they are worth anything as they are just figure type dolls my dad picked up as a souvenirs in all the countries he visited while i was a kid.  i am considering selling them on ebay but before i do, i want to be sure they aren't worth more than the 10-20 bucks i will be asking for them.  Some of them have tags on them still but none of them have boxes.

So the question is, where would i go to get these looked at?  They aren't antiques (i am not THAT old lol they are only about 30 years old.  Any ideas?

I am a doll collector, and honestly, ebay is the best source for what is selling... sad, I know. Souvenir stuff pretty much has souvenir type value, so it's a matter of hitting your market. If there is a doll show in your area, a dealer might be interested in the lot.

You might also ask Mons, though she has not frequented these forums for the past year.

I'd use ebay as a research tool in general, you can find out a lot that way. One thing to consider if and when you list them is to sell the whole group together or one by one. Or small lots.

Either do google searches on the make and models of the dolls or do a google for doll collecting in your area and have them appraised.

Thanks everyone for your insight.  I have already searched google for collectors in my areas and these dolls aren't "brands" they are dolls made by locals in other countries.  I usually try and do my own research prior to asking on discussion boards.

That's why I said make and model not brand. Certain types of locally made dolls are more desirable than others. Since I don't know what you have, make and model seemed more inclusive and less wordy than "figure out what style, region, etc, approx. date".

Aquatic Sub, these are not dolls with makes and models, many of them are handmade from villages throughout the world, where my dad picked them up.  If they were make and models i would have no problems finding out what they are going through.  That's why I've asked how to find a doll collector who may be able to look at them and tell me if they have any worth to collectors.

As i said, i appreciate your insight.  If it was a matter of looking up make and model, i wouldn't have had to seek out advise.

Are you near a big city? An appriaser might be worth looking into.

Some of the dolls might have a higher value because of the origins. Folkart can fetch a better price, particulatly if it is in a sought after genre.

Yeah, i think i may call a couple of the appraisers i have listed to see what they recommend.  I guess they have always been dolls to me lol so i never thought of them as folk art.  But many could probably pass for same.

Thanks.

Angel,

Perhaps you should be thinking of them more as cultural artifacts
as much as they are dolls.  They might be worth more to some museum
or collector when considered from that perspective since they are the
handmade products of each individual culture?

Perhaps the best market is not doll collectors?

You didn't read my response. I said "Certain types of locally made dolls are more desirable than others. Since I don't know what you have, make and model seemed more inclusive and less wordy than "figure out what style, region, etc, approx. date"."

I know they aren't brands. Make and model is also a figure of speech. In this case, their make would be country and model would be type. Hence the above of: Style, region and approx. date.

oh for christ sake Aquatic sub -- give it a rest already.

I appreciate your input but seriously give it a rest already. Its really not that deep for you to have to keep responding.  For someone who claims she doesn't like conflict you are like a terrier on this.

I appreciate your input, let's move on.

Give it a rest? I posted once with my advice, you then reminded me that they weren't brands, I explained myself and that I aware of that and then you showed that you didn't read my post and told me again about them not being brands. I responded by showing you quite clearly that I was aware in my explanation that they aren't brand names and I need to give it a rest?

I didn't realize that pointing out I had been misread was so troubling to you.

ETA: You think this is a terrier? *grins* Again, this is a grand total of 4 posts. 1 with my response, 1 with my explanation of how I was using make and model, 1 pointing out that you clearly didn't read my response before responding since I said "locally made" and now this one.

Truly... I'm on a warpath. Everyone, lock up your dolls!

OP

Three minutes on Google found several different types of dolls and where to sell them.  You need to figure out exactly what you have, and go from there.  Also, some collectibles are considered antique after 25 years.

Go to an actual store that sells collectible dolls and look around.  Most shop owners love what they do and are more than willing to offer opinions and advice.

sidenote
Aqua, I always loved your green, but never realized it was  camo for when you are on the warpath until this very moment.

edited cause rampage aint warpath...

Congrats Aquatic sub, you've managed to have me not giving a fuck about my own thread in 4 posts.

I am done with my own thread because i am not going to continue to read the BS you obviously are now going to make my thread.  Thanks, if your intent was to be irritating you've managed it and i will leave you to do with this thread whatever you wish.

Thanks for all who gave me some ideas.  Please don't waste your time posting any other suggestions because i won't be on the thread anymore.

Justanothersub, actually taking them to a store was what i had planned to do, but when i looked for such stores in Nashville, I couldn't find them and thought maybe i was looking for the wrong type of store.  Part of the problem i really don't know what i have.  I didn't realize that about antiques so thanks for that heads up, someone suggested folk art, which may be a way to go for many of them, i think i will also contact Vandy or the Frist Center to see if they have suggestions.  Thanks for your thoughts but what i found on searching google wasn't helpful which is why i thought to post a thread.  Many people gave me helpful suggestions.

I will figure it out but am going to jump out of this thread as its more irritating now to me than helpful.

angel

As you wish. It's not my fault you didn't read my post and see that I said "locally made" nor is it mine that you are bothered by people who don't like being misread and will point out when they were.
