lazarus1983 -> Are Men Jealous of Women's Ability to Reproduce? (12/6/2010 4:59:35 PM)

So I was re-watching one of my favorite movies, Up In The Air, when the know-nothing know-it-all young gal accuses George Clooney's character, and all men, of being jealous of women's ability to have babies.

Now this isn't the first time I've heard this statement. My adopted mother, a very extreme feminist, firmly believes that cloning is man's attempt to take reproduction from women. Or something.

Now she's just retarded, so I easily dismiss her ramblings. And me, I am perhaps an anomaly because I absolutely hate children and all that comes with them. So my opinion is obviously jaded. But that notwithstanding, I can't see anything envious about the childbirth process. To me, that's like envying the guy that gets an alien bursting from his chest. I would never ever want the ability to have children, ever ever ever.

But for everyone else here, have you heard this belief before? What are your opinions?

I heard of it- and I think it is silly.

each sex has their own pluses and attributes.

I'm not jealous, but then I quite like being able to piss standing up. I'll take that over having kids any day, frankly.

Lucylastic -> RE: Are Men Jealous of Women's Ability to Reproduce? (12/6/2010 5:26:11 PM)

some maybe, theres enough permutations in the human psyche, but I would think most are bloody glad they cant get pregnant, until they are in a bonded relationship at least, even then ...
I know its nowhere near the numbers of women who wish men could go thru pregnancy and birth.

Moonhead -> RE: Are Men Jealous of Women's Ability to Reproduce? (12/6/2010 5:30:39 PM)

That's an interesting thought. You reckon it could be projection, then?

FR

[sarcasm]

Oh yes I am soooooo jealous, nine months carrying an extra 25 to 40 lbs, retaining water, and hormones going apeshit.   Yes I am jealous of all that......

No, not really, I wouldnt want to "demean " that feeling.
the miracle of birth is  soul smacking and I can see why some men would like the ability.
I read somewhere once that during childbirth in some tribe(somewhere) the male  has his testicles tugged on by the woman in labour, so he can feel her pain
I would suggest that as a test of wether the man has "romantic ideas" about childbirth or is down with the  reality:)
That being said, I did it three and a half times so what does that tell you ?

Elisabella -> RE: Are Men Jealous of Women's Ability to Reproduce? (12/6/2010 6:04:31 PM)

I think that men having childbirth envy is about as likely as women having penis envy.

This.

I'd say that some men would probably like to experience birth. Just like some women - such as myself - see positively no appeal in the experience. If the fates allow it, it'll be adoption for us with maybe one natural child. Maybe...

camille65 -> RE: Are Men Jealous of Women's Ability to Reproduce? (12/6/2010 6:08:29 PM)

I think it is less about being envious over the ability to give birth, and more that it is irritation that it is out of their (as men) control. Of course that only applies to that segment of the population to which it applies! I've met many men who felt very little about the topic.

To say that all of one group feels ________ about ________ is nutty IMO. Given the sheer numbers of human men, I'm fairly sure that yes there are a few who are jealous but certainly not all men.

PyrotheClown -> RE: Are Men Jealous of Women's Ability to Reproduce? (12/6/2010 6:14:53 PM)

jealous of having a five pound thing come out of my genitalia, no
jealous of having my genitalia bleed once a month, no
jealous of being allowed into the female shower room, yes

TreasureKY -> RE: Are Men Jealous of Women's Ability to Reproduce? (12/6/2010 7:13:34 PM)

FR:

I don't believe the envy (jealousy is the incorrect term) being referred to is so much about the physical act of giving birth, but more the esoteric experience of creating life within oneself.  Yes, men are a vital part of creating that life, but their participation in the process is so much more limited in scope... both in time and resources.

I also believe that Camille is correct in that, for some, there can be an envy of control.

That being said, I don't consider this to be a prevalent feeling among men, in general.

The only thing I'm jealous of women is their ability to have multiple orgasms.

Though, I'm not sure how this is relevant to religion or politics.

I suspect the OP felt that this was a feminist belief so therefore would fall into the "political" realm.  No harm, no foul.

Well, I figured that this topic had the potential to get pretty hostile and accusatory, so I'd just rather stick it here than in the more mellow Off Topic. I mean jesus, there are people over there crying over hurt feelings and name calling.

tazzygirl -> RE: Are Men Jealous of Women's Ability to Reproduce? (12/6/2010 9:37:54 PM)

I suspect it will be moved to there, so your attempt will have been futile.

Primarily that the entire topic is unworthy of discussion. Apart from the biological benefit of lengthier orgasms, and the judicial one (in western society) to abuse the institution of marriage by suckering men into financing their lifestyles and taking half their wealth in divorce, I see no compelling advantage in being a woman.

And if there were one, it would certainly not be hours of agony in childbirth, hence the "unworthy" part.

My comiserations, by the way, on your stepmother being a rabid feminist. However, you seem to have turned out all right in spite of it, kudos to you.
