I was driving my car with the radio on. I still recall feeling the emotional pain upon hearing the terrible news.

It's not important that John Lennon spent many years purging personal demons and finding his way. What's important is that he managed to rise above these problems, and endeavored to make the world a better place for humanity.

Through his music and activism, Lennon possessed the rare ability to raise the collective consciousness of the people. One can only imagine what the world might be today, had his life not ended so tragically 30 years ago tonight.

I was 8 years old. To be honest I have no idea what I was doing and he didn't make any kind of impact on my life till I was older.

My doing anything 30 years ago would raise a lot more questions than answers.

I was in Guantanimo Bay, Cuba (GTMO) on a Coast Guard cutter and we were in for a few days to onload food , fuel, ("Motion Lotion") and supplies for the last ten days of our Drug/Haitian migrant interdiction patrol.
We heard about it on Armed Forces Radio, the only thing available to us there. And it was hot as hell there even in December.

Shit, I'm a guy. I was fulfilling my 1970's manly duty and watching Monday Night Football. Found out from Howard Cosell.

In my mother's living room, listening to the radio while she was cooking.

My first reaction was "they shot John not Ringo?!".

I was living in West Palm Beach, but visiting my parents here. I remember going to the mall with my mom and every store was playing Beatles music. What a senseless tragedy.

Hmmm lemme see now, I was 15 and getting towards the end of a 16 hour shift listening to SOD from memory and a waiter minced in and told me that someone had shot one of the Beatles.

I felt a bit empty until I found out it wasn't Sir Paul and then I went back to my work and music.

Those where the days, Waiters just don't mince the way their used to.
