It's Official: Republicans Ban Earmarks in the 112th Congress

In a victory for taxpayers and advocates of a more open and accountable government, House Republicans unanimously accepted a proposal by Rep.-elect Sean Duffy (R-WI) today to ban earmarks in the next Congress. As the New York Times reported, under the new Republican majority, the ban is across the board -- "Democrats will not be allowed to insert earmarks either":

"Earmarks have become a symbol of a Congress that has broken faith with the people,' said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican leader, in a statement. 'This earmark ban shows the American people we are listening, and we are dead serious about ending business as usual in Washington.' ...

'House and Senate Republicans are now united in adopting earmark bans,' said Mr. Boehner, who is set to become the speaker of the House in January. 'We hope President Obama will follow through on his support for an earmark ban by pressing Democratic leaders to join House and Senate Republicans in taking this critical step to restore public trust.''

Politico reports this week that House and Senate Republicans, who voted last month to ban the use of earmarks for the next session of Congress, are now having second thoughts as they realize how difficult it will be to get money for projects in their states.

With the blanket ban in place, some Republicans are talking about redefining the term "earmark," in order to find some wiggle room to secure funding. Meanwhile, left-leaning and libertarian commentators seem to be having a good time watching the GOP legislators squirm.

Status: offline 		Right, and some say that is the hallmark of fiscal responsibility, unfortunately, for the republicans the unintended consequences they so often smirk about are exactly the unintended consequences that bite them square in the ass.

So, it might be one of the learned republicans can tell me how thats gonna work for them, say in terms of the 2012 elections....Hey!!! I know we needed bridges and dams and its a fucking shame how many people got killed in that fucked up interchange by Fluffington Heights, but we were listening to the will of the people and what we got out of it, was fund Iraq, and fuck our homeland.

SO VOTE FOR MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, this is a thread about how there was a unanimous Republican vote to ban earmarks, but now the geniuses have figured out that they won't receive earmarks for their own projects.

And there you have it - a woman so ignorant and mindless, she is on record as admitting that the only reason she became a lawyer - and the only reason she ran for political office - was that in in both cases, her husband told her to. She didn't want to, but her husband told her to do it, and the bible says that wives are supposed to obey their husbands, so she went to law school, and later on ran for political office. There are some republicans in Washington who are actually intelligent, sentient lifeforms, but they're a rarity - most of them are just mindless automatons, believing whatever they're told to believe and doing whatever they're told to do because they're barely bright enough to check for traffic before crossing the street.

Status: offline 		Okay, now is the moment of truth.  The GOP granted the earmark ban as what would have been a major concession to the Tea Partiers if the ban were binding.  So the Tea Partiers now have every reason to feel double crossed.  So... let's see what the young Turks do about it.

Let's see if they squawk about the GOP backpedaling.  If not, they'll be shown as just being business as usual with more high pitched campaign rhetoric.
