This is unacceptable and I think un-American. They have no sense of decency whatsoever.

Senate Republicans block 9/11 health bill

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid ripped into what he described as Republican obstructionism.

"Republicans denied adequate health care to the heroes who developed illnesses from rushing into burning buildings on 9/11," Reid said. "Yet they will stop at nothing to give tax breaks to millionaires and CEOs, even though they will explode our deficit and fail to create jobs.

"That tells you everything you need to know about their priorities," he said.

Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked a bill that would provide medical care for firefighters and other responders to the September 11, 2001, attacks who developed illnesses from breathing toxic, dust-filled air.

I think it's insanely inhumane.   I don't think this should even be up for discussion.   I believe 9/11 responders out to be provided for to whatever extent they need, while alive, and their families to some extent thereafter.     M

You guys talk, like your surprised? The GOP milked 9/11 for every drop it could. The moment it was no longer profittable for them, they stopped. They used 9/11 for so many excuses, it would be funny if it weren't for terrible reasons. 9/11 was using to get us in to Iraq, sign off the Patriot Act, and even create conditions of hatred towards both fellow Americans and immigrants. The Republican Party (and conservatives at large), are not known for being human.

The moment, the GOP has to help out the real heroes (which isn't them), they were against it. The Republicans in this country are truely the most selfish, ignorant and often racist people, I've ever met. If they aren't getting something out of the deal, they are against it. They are the people that will walk up to a Salvation Army person an ask "If I give $0.25, will you give me back $0.50?" and expect a serious answer. The concept of 'being human' is entirely lost on this group of people.

Well, I would comment on this, but I know you really don't mean to insult republicans. You just can't help yourself. Have you considered seeing a professional about that?

As to the OP....sounds like politics as usual. Both side use voting as a means of getting the other guy to do what they want. Nothing new but it does make me wonder if they will be able to get any thing done.

The article could have been titled...

Democrats insist on spending more money that we don't have to provide medical expenses that NY State already pays for....But that headline wouldn't bring out the hand wringing lefties.

No, it's not both sides.

This legislation should have passed unanimously.

This is the reason it did not, from the article:

Republicans have vowed to block any legislation, other than bills to fund the U.S. government, until an impasse is resolved over extending expiring tax cuts for virtually all taxpayers, including the wealthiest Americans.

Now justify that to me.

Write a letter to this guy's family and tell them that:

The most recent death blamed on Ground Zero exposure was retired NYPD detective Kevin Czartoryski, 46, who died last week after a battle with lung disease.

This has been done before. Last time this issue appeared here my problem with it was the amount. Not the idea, the amount of money.

Why would I try to justify something I think is wrong? I said it was politics as usual . I never said I thought it was a good plan. And yes, both sides have been playing this trick for as long as I can remember. Like I said, nothing new.

The $7.4 billion is spread out over ten years.

Although the amounts funded per year will vary, $740 million on average per year is a pretty negligible amount when you consider this year's budget is at $3.55 trillion.

You say it is wrong but go on to rationalize it as both sides doing it.

There is no moral equivalency here.

The GOP is holding hostage the sick and dying so they can retain a tax break for the wealthiest 2% of the population.

That's what I love about conservative Republicans like you Willbeur, you just really don't give a shit as long as your ideological goals are satisfied.

I don't understand why the dems did not pass this bill while they held the Presidency and a filibuster proof Majority in both houses.

Apperantly this was not important to them untill now, when they can play politics with it.

Seriously, if you dems care so much, why wasn't this passed years ago?

"The $7.4 billion is spread out over ten years.

Two "minor" problems with that. (that's only the math part)

1. Just how many people are to be recipients of this money and in what amount ? How much of it is going to go for "administrative costs" for example ?

2. If 740 people are eligible for the funds, that is a million bucks a year each. How many people worked on that building ? I think the money is going to largely sit there and be forgotten about like so many other "lost" dollars. Billions that can't even be found in every CAFR in the country.

The third minor problem is if they were keeping the general public away when those buildings were being worked on, one would assume that those who were allowed to work on the buildings were properly equipped, and ready to deal with an environment about which they had been informed. If not they were either incompetent or NOT INFORMED. Could this be hush money ?

I've been through all this before but rather than be an ass I decided to typo it out again. So be nice or fuck you OK ?
