Northern Ireland is part of the UK. That's the part the noble puritan Cromwell (who I'm told is a bit of a role model among America's lunatic right over that "beheading the King" thang) took over. There's more to it than that, of course, but Cromwell seems to have done a lot to stake the UK having a claim to Northern Ireland. (The term "Ulster" is fashionable with the Fenians, as Cuchulain was a local boy from up there, and beat the shit out of most of the rest of ireland in the course of The Tain.) Everything else is Ireland, and while you do get people down there providing financial support for the Republicans in NI, I don't think most of Ireland really wants the place back. They're all nuts up there, and a lot of them are Scottish presbetyrians imported by some bloke from Holland a while back. Northern Ireland is not the same country as the Republic of Ireland, which is not and never has been part of the UK.
