http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/12/10/5624383-holy-crow-its-an-actual-fillibuster

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks this way.  [:)]

kinkbound -> RE: Yay for Sen. Bernie Sanders!! (12/10/2010 12:26:48 PM)

I like BS (Bernie Sanders, that is).

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Yay for Sen. Bernie Sanders!! (12/10/2010 12:53:07 PM)

LOL. He's fillibustering over something that isnt even planned to be brought to a vote until next week. Its pure showboating and as big a joke as Sanders calling himself an independent.

Fellow -> RE: Yay for Sen. Bernie Sanders!! (12/10/2010 1:03:37 PM)

Mr. Bernie Sanders has a flaw in thinking. Increasing tax on rich does not proportionally change the income distribution between the rich and poor. It may not affect it at all.  The tax  revenue will not increase in proportion and the government spends it favorably on wars, police state operations and so on. The economy has structural problems that the corporate (owned) government steadily refuses to address. Bush tax cuts would have been a good thing if accompanied to reduction of the government spending and actually collecting taxes from the rich (getting rid of the tax avoidance loopholes and other illogical things like for example hedge fund managers income taxed as capital gain etc.).

Its not the least bit illogical. Their fee income and short term capital gains are taxed at the regular income tax rates. The only thing taxed at capital gains rates is the profits on their personal trades...capital gains! In case you dont understand the hedge fund business, they are nothing more than amalgamators of investment capital, and the managers are required to invest in the exactly the same portfolios as their clients as a condition of employment.

mnottertail -> RE: Yay for Sen. Bernie Sanders!! (12/10/2010 1:11:31 PM)

Like Madoff by example?  I am sure that is a colloquial (and not enforceable by law) custom in the insurance peddling business though.

Moonhead -> RE: Yay for Sen. Bernie Sanders!! (12/10/2010 1:37:53 PM)

I wouldn't go citing Madoff as an example. Apparently he's proof that the financial markets are run in an ethical manner, and any bad hats get quickly weeded out before they do any harm.

alwayssummer -> RE: Yay for Sen. Bernie Sanders!! (12/10/2010 4:56:54 PM)

I was able to watch the last three hours of his 8 1/2 hours.  Absolutely riveting.  Sanders' reality was clear, logical, fact based, inclusive and compelling.  I hope (but doubt)Obama and many lawmakers watched.   I sure hope that it becomes a speech Americans can watch long into the future.  It was a live feed on HuffPo, where I hope they continue to offer access, and maybe somebody will perpetuate it on Youtube.  Definitely a watershed political statement at a crucial turning point  in American history.

Pretty hard to cut spending when fiscal conservatives [sic] start two $trillion wars and a $1/2 trillion medicare drug benefit not to mention a $multi-billion ethanol subsidy that does nothing but line the pockets of producers...and BTW WITHOUT paying for any of it.

Obviously, Sanders is educating the people as it obviously needs to be, that raising taxes on the richest only changes one thing, it reduces the deficit. You know, that thing that all-of-a-sudden has something called a T party so upset.

SexyBossyBBW -> ...And It's A Catastrophe For Obama (12/10/2010 11:42:59 PM)

I'm watching Senator Sanders on CSPAN, and it's frankly sad, all of the statements he is making, regarding the largest banks' ownership of the US, and the influence in government they have.   I feel like I just lost my virginity again, and it looks like voting is a sham.   How many people are going to inform themselves enough to counter the financially powerful?

Bernie Sanders is the man!!!    I didn't think he was going to last 5 hours, never mind, nearly 9.    http://www.businessinsider.com/the-filibuster-is-in-its-4th-hour-and-its-a-catastrophe-for-obama-2010-12..

Wow, I fully expected to be bashed, slammed, or just ignored when I posted that link.  Of course, I would have chalked it up to people wanting to believe in their party.  Quite frankly willbe, its people who want to so desperately believe in their party that prevents them from believing an Independent can not only think for himself, but his thinking is for "himself" and what his causes mean to him.  Sen. Bernie Sanders is standing for what he believes is true and sad in America.  And speaking out against being held hostage by the party that wants to keep things as they are.  If that is the democratic way, then hell, I may as well register as a democrat because I believe in the senators logic, too.  The status quo isn't good enough.

**Edited to add....I liked your link SexyBossyBBW.  It has a lot of good information in it and was very revealing.

Correct but add in the fact that capital gains tax is applicable only if those trades are held for at least a year before cashing out.
