Zucker!

It disgusts me that our respective economic systems over-reward some, whilst others live in poverty. Damn right he should be giving some of that money away - what would anyone want with billions? Once a person is stupidly wealthy, any additional millions of dollars heaped onto them are surely just a fucking irrelevance to them and an insult to the rest of us.

That's a bit strong don't you think?

I hated those people that obtained 500+ merits at school, in five years all I ever got was a lowly 25 merits. I think they should give some of those merits they have to charity because I can't afford to give mine away...oh no.

CerVeza -> RE: Zuckerberg Joins 'The Giving Pledge': 17 More Billionaires To Give ... Dec 9, 2010 ... Mark Zuckerbe (12/11/2010 5:23:26 AM)

and to all those leftist billionaires like puppet master soros who feels he isn't taxed enough (I know, they are crazy), you can all visit http://thurly.net/0ffj and pay MORE in taxes! Yay! Let the government waste even more of your wealth! Pretty cool eh?

You may need to help me out. What is the point you are making here?

I thought it was quite straight forward...

Anyone can make donations and kindness isn't based on the percentage of your wallet that you give away.

I don't have a problem with that - it is clearly true. But it was posted as a reply to my rather uncharitable comment that these bastards are over-rewarded in the first place. I don't see the connection...

It costs Zucker nothing to give away half of his fortune because when he's done that, he's still going to have way more money than he knows what to do with.

I'm not impressed by a billionaire giving away $2bn. I am more impressed by a homeless guy sharing a sandwich with someone he meets in cardboard box city.

You arent the arbiter of who is or isnt over-rewarded. In a largely free-market system it is IMPOSSIBLE for someone to be "over-rewarded".

You're disgusted at generosity?    I don't looooove the rigged capitalist system, but generosity I can love all day.    M

Is giving away something you don't need, and that you won't miss when you have given it, really generosity? Or is it just grand-standing? Funny isn't it how these generous types always make sure the press are there to see their generosity.

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: Zuckerberg Joins 'The Giving Pledge': 17 More Billionaires To Give ... Dec 9, 2010 ... Mark Zuckerbe (12/11/2010 2:51:19 PM)

Generosity is not something anyone should have to explain or apologize for.   It's a great virtue.   It isn't directed towards you, so it makes no difference that you seemingly don't know to graciously accept.
There are many, many ways to burn one's money, if one wants to.   These people clearly have a lot of money, but don't tell me they're giving it away to charities, because they can't think of anything to do with it.    Have you heard of 100 million dollar houses, boats, clothing, paintings?    All a huge waste,  inhumane conspicuous consumption is in vogue, didn't you know?   I find the humanity of these wealthy people inspiring...   In fact, it's the only time I love wealthy people; when they also happen to be kind, generous, and humane (redundant, I know).    M

After I will get my first billion, I will be ready to join. The estate tax will be back to 55% soon. Paying it as a charitable donation would be cool.
Their "giving away" often means setting up a trust fund for charitable cause (they still own it).

tazzygirl -> RE: Zuckerberg Joins 'The Giving Pledge': 17 More Billionaires To Give ... Dec 9, 2010 ... Mark Zuckerbe (12/11/2010 2:53:25 PM)

To be honest, they havent given away anything yet with this pledge. Its meaningless until they do.

I know Bill and Melinda Gates already do a great deal of charity work.

$100 million to the schools in Newark,NJ isnt a bad start.

Just a waste of money.

I agree, money is not the problem with the vast majority of under-performing schools. But $100 million is far from not giving anything away, even if misplaced.

Which is one of the flaws of the free-market system.

Unless you want to explain to me how a baseball player making $28 million a year is more valuable to society than a doctor or a firefighter.
