DarkSteven -> What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 6:00:44 AM)

Charles6682 brought up an interesting point regarding Obama being called a Muslim, which I am going to generalize - does it matter what a person is in his/her personal life?  If I elect someone based on his or her views and future votes matching closely to mine, does their personal life matter?

Romney has had to face this.  There are a lot of people who support his stances but not his Mormon religion.  I argue that it hasn't really hurt Obama because the people that believe that he is a Muslim or care whether he is or not, IMO would oppose him anyway on grounds of his politics.  In O'Donnell's case, I suspect that her core support group would be turned off if they believed that she was a former witch.

Aside from religion, Marion Berry and James Traficant reran after felony convictions, believing that their past was irrelevant.  In Berry's case, he was shown to be right as he was reelected.

It obviously matters to us whether a candidate will vote the way we want hi or her to do.  Does his or her character matter to you as well?

Moonhead -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 6:04:00 AM)

Not really, but then I'm not an American from the bible belt.

CerVeza -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 6:12:07 AM)

haha, hilarious. My problem is odumbo won't admit what he is. Bush isn't a Muslim, yet he failed to correctly identify our enemy as RADICAL ISLAM, so I was never too happy with him either, although he'd be 1,000 percent better than what we are stuck with now. Same with Dear Leader. The mainstream press has traditionally served as a vetting agent... in other words, they would ask the hard questions of candidates... They did not in 2008 because they fell in love with him. Knowing just that he had a close 20 year relationship with Rev Wright and hearing that idiots views was enough for me. Add on that we still have no idea where the guy was born. I have a birth certificate I can produce in minutes, for instance. But not so for Dear Leader. We have no idea what his transcripts would show... "foreign student" at Occidental? Then we get to his marxist views, and this isn't my wild imagination. Hope and change. OK, I will ask again what I asked in 2008. What the hell does that mean? See, when people vote without thinking, this is what you get. A "feel good" president like odumbo or your prom date like clinton. And the intelligencia calls Palin stupid. Well, I call STUPID voting for a guy to make some kind of statement that you are not racist. Now the demos are looking for a candidate even to the LEFT of this guy. IS THAT POSSIBLE? Hey, maybe Michael Moore will run for prez! WHY NOT? It's as nuts as Dear Leader as president. And yeah, why be bothered with trifling things like character? Everybody lies and cheats, right?

cuckoldmepls -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 6:20:19 AM)

Well it has to matter, because if you are pro muslim, then you will appease Muslims both here and overseas, not to mention apologizing for Americans. What do we have to apologize for? Keeping the world free for democracy for 55 years and opposing any new Hitler who wants to destroy civilization then take it over. Both Osama bin Laden, and Saddam Hussein, and now Iran's crazy leader all fill that bill.

The reason he got elected was because he lied to the American people about what his true faith is. If he had told the truth, and people were still foolish enough to vote for him, then fine, albeit a huge mistake, since we have seen numerous examples of how he works against America in order to appease and show support for them. He even ordered NASA to include them in the space program. Geeeeze, that's all we need is a muslim suicide bomber in space, where all he has to do is push a few buttons, and the space station is destroyed.

CerVeza and cuckold, I believe that your posts above supported the statement I copied from my original post.

News to me that the Dems are even looking for a candidate at all right now.  In the event that Obama runs for a second term, and I suspect he will, I can't see anyone opposing him in the primaries as anything more than a protect vote like McCloskey was.

pahunkboy -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 6:51:07 AM)

...the folks that clamor about Obama being muslim are weak in their relationship with God.

So - it is an oxymoron.

What about folks that did NOT vote for Obama but STILL think Palin is stupid?

pahunkboy -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 7:15:23 AM)

We are just days to the next election cycle.   so who cares.

who in the right mind would even want the job?

Pays more than my current job and the perks are unbelievable.

Seriously, I have certain political beliefs, and to be paid, and paid WELL for making them come to be?  I'd love the job, but the campaigning for it would be horrible.

kdsub -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 7:43:46 AM)

It would matter to me if he lied about his religious affiliation not the affiliation itself. I wish a politician had the guts to say "my religion is none of your business...neither is any part of my past or present personal life. Vote for me or don't vote for me on my record and stance on the issues...if you can't do that I don't want or need your vote“.

But once asked and answered I expect the truth.

I STILL think those folks are STUPID.

I STILL think those folks are STUPID.

Well, maybe compared to you, Palin is a genius. [:D]

Okay.  Logic class time.

RacerJim, you are stating that you think these people are stupid either:

1. For not voting for Obama.
2. For thinking that Palin is stupid.
3. For not voting for Obama AND thinking that Palin is stupid (clarification: neither condition individually meets your criterion together but both conditions together do).

Based on your past posts, I'd assume that your intent was #2.

Obama not only lied about his religeous affilation but he also lied about his personal and professional affiliations with domestic terrorists William Ayers and wife Bernadine Dohrn, many of the most prominent radical Communists, Marxists, Socialists in America, ACORN, etc., etc. I beg to differ that a Presidential candiate's past personal life is none of the voters business in that if their past personal life indicates they might/would be a national security risk...if you can't pass an FBI national security background investigation I don't want you having any access to national security anything.

truckinslave -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 9:00:07 AM)

No.
He said only those people who did not vote for Obama AND think Palin is stupid are stupid.
He meant something else, though. I think.

KenDckey -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 9:20:52 AM)

Religion was a fear during the Kennedy Election.  Everyone feared that th Pope would run the country because he was Catholic and therefore had to do what the Pope said.

Fear vs reality are often different.

My opinion   Who cares what religion anyone is.   It is what they do with that religion that counts.

truckinslave -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 9:37:16 AM)

Imo those same fears exist today. Just my opinion-

Dems are terrified of devout candidates because of one issue- their sacrament of abortion.
NancyFran has already had one audience with... was it a Bishop?... because of her genuflections at hte altar of abortion.
Many have speculated that this Pope will make a statement of some sort about voting and support for abortion-supporting candidates.
Kennedy predates Roe.
I don't think a Catholic could be elected to national office today without, essentially, renouncing his faith.

It does in so far as whether their own life reflects the political beliefs they claim to hold.  I don't automatically trust someone to vote how they say they will.  If their character is such that it evidences that they do actually hold the ideology that they claim, then I've something to go on when it comes time to decide whether or not I wish to vote for them.

Catholics are 28% of Congress.

You sure you still want to claim that?

truckinslave -> RE: What they are vs how they vote (12/11/2010 12:58:18 PM)

Well, yeah...
Of course, I'm probably just projecting the fact that I vote my beliefs whenever possible....
and I not only expect elected officials to do so but think other voters share those expectations?

I think the day may come for a papal bull concerning abortion....
