FirmhandKY -> Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 7:26:19 AM)

In case you missed it, on Friday afternoon, President Obama had a surprise, unannounced and unscheduled press conference.  He brought Bill Clinton in, and after a few minutes Obama took his leave, leaving Clinton alone with a room full of reporters in the White House.

I have to say, this brings up all kinds of thoughts in my mind (and in lots of other peoples minds as well).

First, Clinton did an excellent job of defending Obama's decision.  For allowing Clinton to speak, I give Obama kudos.

However, Obama's leaving early into the conference didn't seem like such a good idea, from a personal presentation point of view.

I felt almost at home with Clinton.  He flowed. He expounded.  He was Presidential.

The comparison that came to my mind between how Obama presents his ideas, and how Clinton performed didn't present Obama in a very good light.

Video of the entire 30+ minute conference:

The New York Times article on the conference:

Another article, which has a much shorter video clip at the bottom of the article:

Yet another fine example of Obama's lack of leadership...relying on a former POTUS, and an Impeached former POTUS to boot, to get him out of another jam.

Just goes to prove, once again, that Joe Biden hit the nail squarely on the head during a 2008 Democratic primary debate when he said "He [Obama] does not have the experience or judgment to be President. The President is not a job for on the job training."

Excellent message.  Clinton had a mid term shellacking and found a way to compromise with the republicans (after some rocky shit) back in 94 and the government shutting down (intimating, do you want that again?) Obama made his proposal with input from the republican leadership in order to find a starting point for some sort of compromise, and now its up to the rank and file lawmakers to make the law and fight it tooth and nail.

The message--- find a compromise, this is the same situation more or less we've found ourselves in,  same shit different day, I did my bit, you do yours. Close the government, change the proposal to your hearts content.  But shit or get off the pot.

Louve00 -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 8:19:39 AM)

It was an excellent message...or explanation of their strategy.  As far as Obama leaving about 5 minutes into it all, I personally think that was the plan.  People are getting boisterous over Obama and his deals (and attempt to compromise) with the republicans.  The republicans are a useless lot though when it comes to compromise.  He's losing democratic support.  What better way to lift their spirits and get everyone back on the same page by putting a different...another excellent speaker in, besides himself, to convince everyone this is the right way to go.

Is it really the right way to go?  I surely don't know.  But I'm so damn tired of republicans trying to bully everyone into getting their way.

It was a bit surreal, Firm. The imagery of the President leaving his microphone, and the task of a do-over on defending his deal, in the hands of Clinton struck me. It didn't look good, and it doesn't inspire much confidence in our current leadership.

Not to hijack, but one thing about the coverage is interesting. President Obama clearly said he had a Christmas party to attend, yet all the reporting I saw referenced it as a "holiday" party.

tazzygirl -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 8:57:45 AM)

Oh heaven forbid! He called it a "Christmas" party.

mnottertail -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:09:26 AM)

He didn't call it North Korea at least.

TheHeretic -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:09:47 AM)

Exactly, Tazzy. Why the choice by the media to give it the generic label?

Another thing to note about the conference was the President's statement that Gibbs would take the last question, but by the time Wild Bill was done, the press corps had no further interest in hearing from the present administration, and everybody just left.

mnottertail -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:12:55 AM)

They had holiday parties to get to, mayhaps.

tazzygirl -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:15:30 AM)

Maybe they have been instructed not to use the word "Christmas"

mnottertail -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:17:40 AM)

I doubt Obama can be blamed in any fashion for the news medias PC, or can he?

truckinslave -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:20:47 AM)

He clearly has no appetite for the work of governing- neither for the debate nor for the drafting and researching of legislation. He's just phoning it in, looking down his nose at the little people doing his bidding; and it clearly irritates it him that anyone dares to disagree.
Strangely, to me, Hilary seems to me to have a real taste for the work, for the day-to-day business.
0bama0 and Mishe both have taken to the pomp and circumstance rather well, doncha think?

OT- what did you think of his screed about " some say it's unwise to negotiate with hostage-takers... unless the hostage is being harmed"? (That's from memory, but it's close. I suspect you heard/saw it). I thought it was flabbergastingly stupid. Wonder how many terrorists are looking for hostages?

truckinslave -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:22:55 AM)

the press corps had no further interest in hearing from the present administration

Hard to imagine. Me. The press corpse. Common ground.

TheHeretic -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:23:38 AM)

Who is trying to blame Obama for it? Much more likely that some editors have sent out a memo. I just found it interesting that the press was PC-ing up the President's statements.

tazzygirl -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:26:38 AM)

So much for truth in journalism

truckinslave -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:29:38 AM)

Facts, truth, spin- it all takes a backseat in the lamestream media to PC

He did step on his boy-bits with that comment, didn't he? I hate to think how over the top his demonization rhetoric is going to get as we move towards him having to deal with a Republican controlled House, and the '12 campaign.

tazzygirl -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:36:43 AM)

I, personally, have no problem with a leader facing a problem and looking for brains to pick who have "been there, done that".

truckinslave -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:39:21 AM)

There is a big difference in picking brains and, having done so, still lacking the brains/stones to defend your own position.

truckinslave -> RE: Clinton-Obama Impromptu Press Conference (12/11/2010 9:40:53 AM)

yeah, at this rate we'll be at "evil minions of Satan" before Memorial Day.
Be nice to get that milestone out of the way.
