Take what's good, discard the rest and go with your gut instinct. Above all, be careful, you're inbox will fill for the first little while until you drop from the new users list. Make sure you're safe above all if you go meet someone in person, and make it a public place.
A good place to start might be to google your local area, look for munches and events near where you live. Get out, make new friends, pay attention, be polite and be yourself.
