We are pretty friendly on the whole - easily as friendly as the Americans. But we have a lot of very loud ass-holes amongst us (as this site is testament to), and they tend to drag the average down. I think it's to do with the class system.

I don't know if you caught this from earlier in the thread (it's back several pages now) but we really do know this on our side of the pond.  We honestly don't judge all of you by the worst examples.  When it happens to be someone English who is just spouting bile, we don't think that all of you are that nasty and full of contempt.

I will say one thing.  I have noticed how often your countrymen have spoken up on threads and even sent private emails on occasion to say that they don't want people to think a certain individual is representative of all of you.  (This happens to be a person that multiple people have told Me that they have this individual on hide or have mentioned somewhere that they were thinking of putting him on hide.)  While I think it's very polite, it makes Me feel almost apologetic that some folks feel that this person is such an embarrassment to your entire country.

To be fair, if I were American, I'd feel exactly the same way about some of the US posters on CM. There are some complete nutters out there [;)]

You have a Greek accent?! [:D]

As a Brit who has lived and worked all over the UK as well as spending a fair amount of time in the US, I have to agree with GT that it all boils down to 'people are people' in the end. I find london and New York are full of busy, stressed people who don't like to talk. Whereas time spent here in the North East of England and in San Jose are less stressed and infinitely more friendly.

Although during my time in london I made the effort to strike up conversations with strangers, and the vast majority responded with warmth and friendliness.

We Londoners are known for being warm, fluffy people [;)]

Seriously though, and I've said this before; despite both their reputations, I'd say London and New York were as friendly as huge cities get. I've always had a smashing time in both.

In fact, it's almost never I have any hassles anywhere; I'd go along with GT - it's just "people"; you get great folks, and the occasional arsehole, everywhere.

It really depends how you approach people, if they see you make an effort they usually react in a nice way, if they see you make an effort to be a disagreeable, obnoxious git, the respond in the same currency.

I wouldn't know - I'm always sunshine and smiles [;)]

Seriously though; I honestly don't think I could be nasty as an initial policy; it's just not "me" - on the rare occasions I've snapped at someone in the street when they haven't done anything to me (due to having had a bad day, or being tired or whatever) I've felt instantly dreadful, and on most occasions I've caught them up and apologised.

However I am very sharp when someone I don't know is unpleasant to me as a first step. I can turn quite nasty under those circumstances, although I see that as their problem for starting it [;)]

Completely fair and it illustrates the point.  We've had a few that were just so bad that I think people were actually happy when they disappeared.  One or two were actually invited to leave, from what I understand.  [8D]

LadyConstanze -> RE: When you hide an idiot... (12/18/2010 7:47:55 AM)

Anybody who asks for the way and starts with "Excuse me, could you tell me..." is usually met with a friendly reply. A "Hey, you, where in this bleeding shitpit do I find...." would possibly not get a friendly reply, at least from me, I would most likely reply complete nonsense in another language and pretend to not understand what they are asking for...

The ones that make me laugh are the Republican/Democrat "robots"; whatever has happened, from the total collapse of world banking to them stubbing their toe this morning, it's all the fault of <insert name of leader of “the other lot”>. Some of the things that get pinned on the President, be it Bush. Obama, or the next bloke (or woman [;)]) are beyond belief.

Then there are the conspiracy theorists ... I don't know what it is about conspiracy theorists, but America seems to produce some of the best. It's one area where I feel we Brits are seriously losing ground, and maybe we need to do some research into why we're falling behind in the World League Of Black Helicopter Spotters ...

... on second thoughts; maybe not [;)]

I wasn't even going in that direction.  LOL.  I was thinking  more the troll variety.

There are some who come across here that I'm willing to be that, if I started a poll, at least half of the folks around the boards could identify them by My simply mentioning what they caused such a stir about.  Off their rocker to say the least, but some of them have been funny as hell.

Nope, and neither does Philly-boy...

There's a reason for the lack of stress, London and NYC are centres of wealth-generation, which entail greater competition and effort, which mean stress.

Despite being a Londoner I have a habit of starting chats with total strangers. But for some reason they all seem to be young and female, never could work out why...

Yeah sometimes it's like watching a really entertaining car crash [;)]

sblady -> RE: When you hide an idiot... (12/18/2010 8:42:29 AM)

I don't have anyone on hide. If I happen to scroll across a post or topic by the few people who routinely irritate me, I keep right on scrollin'. I don't take many things to heart in real life, I certainly don't plan to do so with people on the net.

Actually I was thinking along the lines of Jerry Springer. It's amusing for a few brief minutes, then you get that irresistible urge to shower and disinfect...

Depends. Some of the ones who seriously lose it are entertaining for quite a while.

I'll be the first to admit that some of the things around here have made Me laugh so hard that I've scared the neighbor's dog.  I would never put the folks who inspire that on hide.  I'd only be cheating Myself out of some great entertainment.

Oh hell yeah.

With some folk you can almost see the steam coming out of the monitor, and hear the keys being mashed, as they type [;)]
