ORIGINAL: LadyConstanze But back to the ignore or hide button, I like it. Sure, no point in caring enough what a stranger on the internet writes, so why not just phase the post out, but on the other hand, why read a post if you know it's going to be a waste of time anyway? I guess I'm feeling my age and worry about all those minutes of my life that I won't get back, I could have done something useful, like petted the cats or the dog... Fair comment. There's also (for me) the boredom and repetitiveness factor; with some posters I know pretty much as soon as I see their name what they're going to say, therefore there's not a whole lot of point bothering to read them. The “hide” option is therefore a way of saving time which, as you point out, is precious stuff. CM used to have a less-liberal attitude to conflict or disagreement; virtually anything was jumped on as “excessively rude” or “aggressive”. What this led to, in my opinion, was a large number of sheep milling around spouting pure cobblers, and anyone attempting to mock them for doing so got cut out pretty quickly. It gave the place the feeling of a Sunday school run by a rather overbearing nun. A while back (not sure when as I drift in and out of CM depending on a number of factors) that changed, with mods becoming more tolerant and less concerned about unimportant comments, which led to (again in my opinion) more robust and entertaining debates, rather than the somewhat stilted chats of old. However, an inevitable corollary of that was that more people will end up saying more things that more people don't like or agree with. Personally I think that's a reasonable trade-off, so long as there’s a “hide” button for when a person feels someone’s vitriol is more than they can stand to read.
