Brain -> Arizona Is the New California, and Its Already Changing Our Lives (12/15/2010 10:44:48 PM)

I think Jerry Brown will get California back on the right track and it will become once again the trendsetter for the rest of the country.

Arizona Is the New California, and It's Already Changing Our Lives

Once upon a time, California was the trendsetter for the rest of the country. What happened there tended to spread, whether it was property tax cuts or stringent environmental regulation. But now it's time for the Golden State to exit stage left. We have a new outsized player in national life. It's Arizona, and it's taking us in a whole new direction.

The Grand Canyon State has been in the news this year for enacting what's been called the country's toughest immigration law and for Medicaid cutbacks that amount to death sentences for transplant patients.

Like most states, Arizona is in dire fiscal shape and is cutting back services. After news outlets revealed the state had in effect imposed death sentences on Medicaid recipients awaiting transplants, horrified legislators said their first bill of 2011 would be to restore the money.

What I wonder is, as a naitive born and raised, why so many people have a problem with what we do within our borders.   For the most part, it is those outside our borders that are complaining.   What business is it of someone living in Canada or across the country, what we want.   if that is the case,t hen shouldn't everyone be interested in what the local city council does in BFE?

"Trendsetter for the rest of the country?"
I don't think any of those "trends" ever made it up to New England.

That isn't what I said.   Re read it,  I did not attempt to take anyones opinion, just wondered WHY SO MANY PEOPLE....

You have a problem with my asking why?

claree -> RE: Arizona Is the New California, and Its Already Changing Our Lives (12/16/2010 5:55:21 PM)

I have to agree with KenDckey.  During and after the Prop. 8 campaign in California, I would receive emails from people I barely knew demanding to know why it didn't pass.  I would ask--did you vote for it?  --Well, no, I live in Ohio/England/wherever---  --Well, then, shut up.

I don't think some of the media have been helpful--they always strive to find how something happening in one state will magically affect everyone else.

And to reply to the OP, I would hope that Jerry Brown will get California back on track, but I really really doubt it will happen. I think mostly he'll just raise everyone's taxes.

I don't care what happens in California. I just don't want the rest of the country sending them tax dollars to bail their ass out. I think the budget hole in CA is nearing 23 billion. A liberal like Jerry Brown should have no problem fixing that.

Brain -> RE: Arizona Is the New California, and Its Already Changing Our Lives (12/16/2010 7:43:32 PM)

Because what happens in the United States effects every other country in the world; I don't know how you could ask such a question when Wall Street recently collapsed the world economy.

And if you mean by borders, the borders of California I have family that live in Riverside.

States like New York, California and Massachusetts have a lot in common.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Arizona Is the New California, and Its Already Changing Our Lives (12/16/2010 8:14:53 PM)

All three have REALLY high taxes and they're broke anyway?

Brain -> RE: Arizona Is the New California, and Its Already Changing Our Lives (12/16/2010 8:30:40 PM)

Far too many states have financial problems these days and Americans always think they paid too much tax.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Arizona Is the New California, and Its Already Changing Our Lives (12/16/2010 8:33:10 PM)

My state has one of the lowest tax burdens in the nation, a balanced budget AND a $400M 'rainy day fund'

It CAN be done

ok   but I live in AZ and we are discussing what happens in AZ, not what happens in Riverside, LA, Toronto, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iran, Atlanta, Germany, NY or anywhere else outside the borders of AZ   What business is it of anyone else except those within our boundries?   You are avoiding that and I am not sure why.   Maybe you can explain that to me.

Brain -> RE: Arizona Is the New California, and Its Already Changing Our Lives (12/16/2010 11:10:03 PM)

If it can/will affect/effect me or my family economically I may have an opinion; this is avoiding the question?

This is funny unusual attitude. Does Arizona news media present only local news? I doubt it is very common in Arizona. Some people from Arizona  for example take part of the occupation of  Iraq or Afghanistan. What business they have there? Most people are interested what happens in other places.  It is just a fact. People are curious creatures.

KenDckey -> RE: Arizona Is the New California, and Its Already Changing Our Lives (12/17/2010 12:42:57 PM)

Interest sure,   but it isn't a federal law, it is a local law, local to AZ.   It doesn't create anything for anyone else.   We, those from AZ, have to pay for it without federal help, so who cares.   We do.   For example, I think some laws in other places are just stupid.   Did you know that in Fresno, CA it is illegal to check the fluids of your vehicle while it is setting on your property or on the street?   I always thought that was just plain stupid and exceeded any defination of common sense.   But really, who care?
