Reminds me of a "Star Trek, The Next Generation" episode with Picard and Q.

I always wondered if we were nothing more than just one big experiment.

Interesting.

Reminds me of the religion threads, where somebody is always ranting about people kissing God's ass because they're afraid of Hell.

OK, ,,,,

GT, I know it's bizzare, that's why I posted it here :-)

BFA, Q was an interesting addition to that series. Prick or no prick, it made it more interesting.

Kirata, I looked for references to God in that and they are not there.

In that light, however, since we just about have perpetual war for perpetual peace, is it possible ? Look at people in general, look at the small claims court, the highway, the politics of the office. All ways to get ahead. But to get ahead of what. I submit AGAIN that we are predatory by nature. I assert that we should not hide that fact, to be open about it.

While that strategy would've likely helped in that episode, what of our episode. I have laid down the rules for war before, but nobody listens. You bomb the shit out of them AND THEN your people walk through the country and make sure there is no living Man, Woman or child, nor dog or horse. Lay waste.

If we get people to submit themselves to the really fucked up world of war, we should at least give them the chance to win. I've known VietNam vets who told me that after they found out the rules of engagement they threw down their weapons. War for peacekeeping is nothing but  a mind game. You can kill them now or kill them much more slowly. Why do we now subject peoples to a slow death of spirit rather than just killing them outright ?

Because we want to look good.

Though fundamentallly heretical to my faith, it had a nice twist at the end, which I always love, though I expected a hell of a lot more wrangling over proof of identity. I'd want several unrelated sources to confirm that comet had indeed just vanished.

Further, even IF some secret society is pulling the world's real strings, I doubt they'd be able to call a complete, Earthwide halt to all hostile actions in 24 hours. The US/NATO etc wouldn't have a chance, not given all the animosity they've generated.

Most tellingly though, I think the alien is quite right - we're an inherently violent species.

The premise of the storyline is implausible.

A society technologically advanced to the nth degree would have already eliminated scarcity... and would have physiologically evolved beyond emotion-based fear linked to scarcity and its many related dysfunctions.

Even if such an advanced life form created new life during the time between their elimination of scarcity and their physiological evolution, there would be no reason for them to believe that their newly created life-forms would evolve fast enough to engineer superior technology.

There's always one, sub, I guess it's you this time ! Really I'm usually the one to say "No fucking way". But then why do I like things like Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, even One Step Beyond....?

I think it comes down to the fact that I see no point in wasting electricity to see everyday people doing everyday things. I could just find a place to park on the lower east side and I wouldn't have any reason whatsoever to watch COPS.

Good for you, but the analogy here is people kissing ass in order to avoid nasty consequences.

God, Kindergarten, take your pick. Get it now?

Aaaah ! Now that you mention it that way I understand. Same concept different flavor. Appease, pleas and down on your knees. Interesting that you picked that out, I didn't.

Probably because I am addicted to irony - I guess I was reveling in that :-).
