I ask because my niece is a few months short of 9, and she's already 5'0". Although we're no small bunch ourselves, my brother (her father) is only 6'0" and her mum is a little runt of 5'3".

I checked the height scales for her age and she should come in an entire TEN inches shorter. Personally I'd love her to be a towering beauty of 5'11" , but gals who are 6'4", well life has enough problems, but that's beside the point, back to the issue at hand;

Can I ask, were any of you exceptionally tall as young girls, and stopped growing (or slowed) very early/abruptly? And if so, how tall did you end up?

Five foot two.  And no, my daughter is not supposed to be much taller.

She may be tall because of tall grandparents.  I was the tallest in my immediate family, but my maternal grandfather was 6'4", I was also the tallest cousin.

Nope, I was tiny.  I don't think I hit 5' until high school, and stopped at 5'4.

You know, now you mention it that's possible but even further up, both my own grandfathers (therefore 2 of her 4 great-grandfathers) were both six-footers despite having smoked heavily from their early teens and impoverished backgrounds. It's my guess that those two factors lopped off a few inches of THEIR height, but the original genes were passed down undamaged. Her mum is also the runt of her family, both whose brothers are fairly large fellas.

I was the third tallest in my class until the 6th grade. During the summer months everyone caught up and passed me on the way to jr high. At age 12 I was 5'1". My full adult height is just under 5'2". Females apparently slow the growing process shortly after they start their first period.

I wasn't exceptionally tall at age 9, but between ages 9 and 12 is when I had my last "growth spurt" that accompanied puberty.  If I had to guess, I was probably between 4' and 4' 2" at age nine, and was 5' 4" by the time I was 13.  That's where I stopped.

I'm not sure if there is much data to back it up, but it is my impression that children in general... and most particularly girls... have been getting significantly taller than their parents in the past few generations.

I'm not sure what height scale you were looking at, but a quick Google search shows that the average height for a nine year old girl is 4'11'.  There is also a height calculator here... and near the middle of the page here, there is a height potential calculator.   Using the heights of her parents you gave, according to the linked calculator her potential height comes in at between 5'1" and 5'8".

Missokyst is correct, too... puberty for girls generally starts two to three years before they have their first period.  The arrival of menses is pretty much an indication that the body has completed the majority of growth and development to reach adulthood.*

* This is average.  There are always exceptions.

I was the tallest person, not just the tallest girl, in my class from kindergarten through 5th grade.  Since my biological father was 6'5", and several of my cousins are over 5'7", my family thought I would end up being six feet tall.  I towered over everyone until 6th grade, when I stopped growing and my peers started.  I finally made it to 5'3" my freshman year of high school.  Turns out, I'm a throwback to my great-great-grandmother who takes after our Picti ancestors (i.e. small and fine-boned).

It seems like it to me, too. I feel like a small person compared to some of the young women I see out and about.

My niece reached 5'11" by her freshman year (14 years old), when she gratefully stopped growing. Her parents are 6'0, and 6'1". Their oldest son (16 years old) is 6'5" with no end in sight. Their Dad, my brother insisted on them not drinking pop and they go through about 2 gallons of milk (three kids and Dad) daily.

I too feel, (and I seem to remember reading some studies that came to the same conclusion) that kids are getting taler as a whole. Watching my sons basketball team play, I feel like looking at a group of tree saplings. Already tall and mostly slender, with huge feet hinting at growth yet to come.

I am 1,63m and my Oldest (reaching 11 next week) is already 1,65m with a shoe size of 43(German) with no end in sight. My 15 year old niece is 1,73m, but has slowed down in the growth department over the last 2 years.

By age 10, I was 5'4" (already taller than my 5'3" mother and wearing a larger shoe size than her).  At age 12, I was 5'7".  As an adult, I always thought I was 5'8", but two years ago, I had them measure my height at Weight Watchers and they said 5'8-3/4", so they gave me credit for being 5'9".  I think I reached my final height by 14 or thereabouts.

With a 5'3" mother and a 5'10" father, I seemed exceptionally tall for the parents I had.  Both grandparents on my dad's side were tall, as was my grandfather on my mother's side.  My sister and I must have gotten our height from them.  My maternal grandmother was even shorter than my mom, maybe 5'1" or 5'2".

I am only about "average" height for a female (a hair shy of 5'8") but I have been this tall since I was, like Mystic, about 11 or 12. The doctors told my mother I would top out between 5'9" and six feet, but I didn't quite make it.. it seems that we slow down around the time of menarche (first blood).
I had a Nana who was 5'10". My mother was 5'6" and my father not even six feet.

I'm 5'4", my daughter is almost 5'10" and my son is about six feet. Their father is about 5'10" so we have no idea where they got it from.

But the height doesn't amaze me as much as their shoe size. Took a couple of pregnancies for me to make a size 8. She's a 10 and he's an 11 1/2. And their friends all are the same.

I've been 5'3" since I was about 12 and I haven't grown an inch since. I never went through a growth spurt. My daughter is the same way at only 5'1". All of my sisters and my my mom are all around the same height me except my youngest sister who is about 5'10". She took after my dad and brother who were/are 6'.

i was five ft four in at 12 and by the time i was 15 i was five ft nine. i was the tallest girl in my class until 8th grade when a girl named theresa started at our school, she was 13 and 6 ft tall. i have 3 sisters, two are five ft ten, one is barely five ft tall. genetics doesn't always follow what we expect, sometimes you get throwbacks to previous generations. that's half the fun of family reunions!

I'm only 5'00" so no, I was not tall as a child.
My daughter is turning 10 and is about 4" shorter than me. She likes to point out that she's almost my height.
I tell her it's no mean feat.
She is also just half a shoe size smaller than me and has been eying my heels.
Time to get a lock.

I was always about 3 inches taller than everyone else, until age 13 when I shot to 5'10".  I'm 5'11" now.
