Mucinex is great.
It is also expensive.

You can get the very same active ingredient that is in Mucinex in any generic over-the-counter "Tussin" cough syrup. Just make sure to skip the DM (dextromethorphan).

Check the label: the active ingredient in both is Guaifenesin.
The difference of course is in the amounts and the fact that Mucinex is in pill form and timed released whereas "Tussin" is in liquid form and you will have to dose yourself every 4 hours.
Simply do the math:
Regular strength Mucinex contains 600 mg Guaifenesin. 1 teaspoon of Tussin contains 100mg.
You would need to take 1 1/2 teaspoons every 4 hours (or you could follow the minimum dosing on the bottle and take 2 teaspoons)
Extra Strength Mucinex is 1200 mg. The equivalent would be 3 teaspoons every 4 hours.

Yes, the pills are more convenient and Tussin tastes [:'(] but for those of us that are pinching our pennys, it really does help to read labels.

I'd rather pay more and not have to deal with liquid, nasty-tasting medicine.  I get bronchitis at least one time during the winter.  It is awful for asthmatics, usually have to get a z-pak and codeine cough syrup along with the mucinex.

I am recovering from asthmatic bronchtis now: medrol dose pack and biaxin which is a stronger cousin of Z-pack.
No codeine cough syrup, the covering Dr wants me to cough.

Half way through the steroids and I can tell that will be my issue...again - as the coughing has gotten more wheezy.
So I think the next thing will be a higher dose of them.

[:(]

I shopped at King Soopers (a Kroger store) and next to the Mucinex on the shelf was the house brand, $4 for a bottle.  BOGO, so I only paid $2 a bottle.

The tablets, Steven? Currently we don't get that here, although a few years ago Robatussin used to make a severe congestion formula: guaifenesin & a decongestant and I used to get that in the max strenghth...but I bought the store brand.

Oh, yeah, I forgot, I also get dosed up with prednisone too.  I have to have a cough suppressant because the coughing makes my wheezing worse.
