DomKen -> DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 12:30:48 PM)

The US comes one step closer to fulfilling the ideals laid out in the words of our founders.

I have never served in the military, but I don't really see the problem with gays serving. If there are individules causing a problem there are ways to discharge them, just as straight males are discharged for various reasons.

I'm just waiting for the GOP to take credit.

It's about time, Gee I wonder how McCan't vote as I speak voted

tazzygirl -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 3:40:32 PM)

The vote passed in spite of the fillibuster.

quote:

US Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts was among six Republicans who broke ranks to help Democrats overcome a procedural hurdle put up by the GOP. The vote this morning against the Republican filibuster was 63-33; at least 60 votes were needed to move the measure ahead. Final passage came in a second vote this afternoon, which passed 65-31, with eight Republicans in favor.

They voted to invoke cloture with the first vote. Then passed the bill with the second.

I figure this is likely to lead to a discussion of gays serving in the military.

Here is a list of countries that allow it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_orientation_and_military_service

Great Britain had many of the same fears that those against it, such as McCain, have voiced.

According to the article above this is what happened:
"Since the military began allowing homosexuals to serve, none of its fears about harassment, discord, blackmail, bullying or an erosion of unit cohesion or military effectiveness have come to pass, according to the MOD, current and former members of the services and academics specializing in the military. The biggest news about the policy, they say, is that there is no news. It has for the most part become a non-issue."

Now I guess we wait and see how many gays actually go out and enlist, or if this was all just a fight for the symbolic victory.

tazzygirl -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 5:35:44 PM)

Wasnt it around 14000 who were tossed out since DADT Passed? I have a feeling there are many, many more still in the military. Now, they just dont have to hide.

TribeTziyon -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 5:35:58 PM)

There are alot of gays in the military already. Now they can be who they are without issues.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a symbolic victory for all those who until today were serving in fear that they could be court martialed at any time or to the thousands of service personnel who were kicked out before.

Well, good job to the Senate. They deserve credit, well,at least most of the Democrat's do.The 8 Republican's who voted to repeal this deserve credit. It really does seem to take America a long, hard, miserable road to finally do the right thing.America finally get's it,after the rest of the free world is already ahead of America on social issue's.Well,at least this horrible chapter in American history is over.Let the biggot's and crybaby's begin their ranting.I'm sure it won't take long.

PyrotheClown -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 7:42:20 PM)

What in God's name are you talking about now?

This wasn't a recruitment tool.  This was so those who came out were not forced to leave the service.

Hillwilliam -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 8:05:05 PM)

An old friend of Mine was on a SEAL team in SE asia in the early 70's. I asked him if it would bother him to have a gay soldier in his squad or as a swim buddy. He said "Can the fucker shoot straight, send a lot of ordnance downrange and not fall apart when the shit hits the fan?"

Of course, those guys WERE a little strange.

tweakabelle -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 8:33:30 PM)

Well done the US of A!

It's always nice to see another facade for hate disappearing anywhere in the world.

Of course. Within the codes of conduct and military bearing they were already subject to, and with the same expectation of discretion placed on any old E-3 tapping the wife of a TDY MSgt.

The back pedaling here is both funny, and pathetic at the same time. We are dragged through all this ruckus, while we are fighting two wars, with escalating craziness in another miserable place where we are obligated to put our troops on the line, and suddenly it's becoming, "well, it was wrong to keep them out, but it's not like they would want to join anyway." There fucking well better be a line at the recruiter's offices in San Francisco on Monday morning.

tazzygirl -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 9:44:59 PM)

Do you honestly believe there arent men and women serving who are not gay?

TheHeretic -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 9:47:38 PM)

I don't understand your question, Tazzy. Edit for clarity?

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: DADT repeal passes the Senate! (12/18/2010 9:52:09 PM)

What in god's name are you talking about? I have no idea what your complaint is. Because we're at war, we don't have the time to correct fundamental injustices in the military unless it increases enlistments? That makes absolutely no sense at all.

You must be saying something  else, and I'm just missing your point. Right?

No no no, i think what he meant was that it'd be a horrible time to dwell not on the personal performance of said enlistedmen, but whether they like to shag in an approved way...Lord forbid we have queers fighting and killing in a warzone if their freaky personal life was unchristian lol

Did anyone notice my Arabic translator shortage link?

Seriously! We're low on Arabic translators because of DADT!What other reason besides that do you need to repeal it...especially in a war...with people who speak arabic

Many men and women enlisted by hiding their sexual orientation. I, personally, dont expect this to make the ranks in the military swell. What I do expect is that this bill will allow our military to focus more sharly on the tasks at hand rather than worrying about who is going to discover their secret.
