Brain -> Opinion: How About Eliot Spitzer for President? (12/19/2010 7:39:58 PM)

I think he paid a heavy price compared to people like John Ensign the junior Republican Sen. from Nevada, Mark Sanford Republican governor from South Carolina and David Vitter Republican Sen. from Louisiana. None of these Republicans resigned from office unlike Eliot Spitzer. I thought he was doing an excellent job as governor in the state of New York and I think he's doing an excellent job on CNN interviewing guests on his show. The man has a lot to offer and it's unlikely he will do any worse than Obama and probably a hell of a lot better.

Opinion: How About Eliot Spitzer for President?

As New York's attorney general, he went after the centuries-old boys' club that said the banks and insurance companies were above the law. The club that said the little guy was always the loser and the big guy was good for early retirement at 35. The club that, just months after the governor's scandal, collapsed for exactly the same reasons Spitzer was investigating them for. He went after the banks, corrupt insurance companies, mutual fund managers, record companies practicing payola and many others looking to cheat the system.

No one else in the history of New York state politics had the guts to go after these "masters of the universe" in such a direct and "in yer face" kind of way. And, as we've seen from Barack Obama's ineffectiveness trying to play "BFF's" with them, that's the only way you can get their attention.

During his campaign, Obama made a lot of noise about taking on the same financial villains. But so far, he's done nothing but talk a game that Spitzer's already proved he can play anytime, anywhere.

I doubt I'll ever have the opportunity, but if the choice were Obama or Spitzer for president, I'd pick a flawed Spitzer over a perfect Obama anytime. Nothing like having a choirboy with a loaded bazooka in the White House who ain't afraid to use it.

I doubt it.   He was not that effective in NY.  I dont see how he would be any better on a national level. NY is one of the most bankrupt states too.

I was in my homestate of New York when Spitzer resigned.I felt he was doing a great job as Governor. He won the Governor's race in a major landslide victory. He is one of the rare Governor's of NY who wasn't afraid to tell it like it is.Once these people get into Albany,it's game as usual. Not with Spitzer. They called him the bulldozer.Albany needed that kind of reform. That's probaly why those in Albany were ready to get rid of him so quick.Albany is such a joke.Clown's run that place.Just for the record,he never spent any taxpayer's or campaign fund's on any of those service's he enjoyed. He used his own money.I agree,Mark Sanford got a little slap on the wrist and that was it.I wouldn't mind seeing Eliot Spitzer run for President. His style is exactly what is needed in Washington D.C.

You must be getting some good drugs up there north of our border. Maybe he will get John Edwards for his running mate..?

Brain -> RE: Opinion: How About Eliot Spitzer for President? (12/19/2010 8:01:13 PM)

I think this bulldozer is exactly what they need in Washington right now to get things done the right way. I hope he does run and he wins by a wide margin just like he did in New York State. I think he would twist some arms to get things done in Washington unlike Obama who it appears doesn't fight for the change he campaigned on so robustly. I'm glad you agree. I think he regrets getting carried away with his sexual escapades and is unlikely to carry on like that in the future.

As long as the tea party doesnt get hold of him, he might be good. And if he can tell Steele to kiss his (_*_) he has My vote.

Been a while since a good moderate Republican has been allowed to run.

servantforuse -> RE: Opinion: How About Eliot Spitzer for President? (12/19/2010 8:05:55 PM)

He only regrets getting caught with a hooker..He's a piece of crap.

Brain -> RE: Opinion: How About Eliot Spitzer for President? (12/19/2010 8:06:10 PM)

Actually, in my case I think it's my vegetarian diet as I don't eat all those chemicals they put in meat like antibiotics and growth hormones and who knows what else. And as far as a running mate is concerned I would prefer Nancy Pelosi and for me that would be the dream ticket.

I would have to learn a lot more about him, to determine if he is worthy...   Yes, I see the cheating with a hooker or anyone as a problem;  it's just that I'm not Christ, and could never throw the first stone.

I think there is something to the man, because when he was outed, and had to resign, there was a huge sigh of relief among many people on wall street.   Given what they did to the banking system, and world economy, I'd bet the man had a lot of the thieves and liars by the balls.
Too bad he had the skeleton, because I would have liked to see him on the national political stage.     M

I agree, he did bust heads on Wall St when he was NY AG.

It is amazing to think that being with a hooker is a bigger crime than what Wall St has done to the country.  But that's our broken hillbilly thinking at work.

Charles6682 -> RE: Opinion: How About Eliot Spitzer for President? (12/20/2010 6:53:19 AM)

Do you know why Eliot Spitzer got caught?! Because David Patterson was his look out guy! LMAO

It's not a matter of him being involved with a hooker, it's a matter of blatant hypocrisy.

When he was Attorney General he crusaded against prostitution and help passed a NY state law increasing the penalties for those who patronized prostitutes.

Then, due to his political influence, he escaped indictment under the very law he helped to pass.

I'm pretty sure we have enough hypocrites in Washington, we don't need another.

EternalHoH -> RE: Opinion: How About Eliot Spitzer for President? (12/20/2010 9:08:11 AM)

He was caught in hypocrisy. He resigned.

Wall St rips you off, and still goes about business as usual.

Yea, you got the real villain in your gun sights.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Opinion: How About Eliot Spitzer for President? (12/20/2010 9:23:37 AM)

Most of what Spitzer did was extort settlements out of companies for practices that were long standing and legal.

So you are trying to justify an illegal act by someone sworn to uphold the laws of the state by saying what he did wasn't as bad so he is qualified to be President.

I think you need to adjust your sights.

I used to work for one of those companies that Spitzer busted heads on (I had left the company before that). At the time, my former employer was AIG's biggest global competitor.  Trust me, what they were caught doing was illegal. And just like it was one little department within AIG that took the whole company down, it was one little department within my former employer that was responsible there as well.

Although over 4,000 were ultimately laid off due to the loss of business on account of the loss of trust (being in the brokering business, the existence of trust is essential or nobody does business with you), and the stock slumped to 25% of its value, thankfully, the company did survive the scandal, and because of the excessive scrutiny by the SEC in the following 5 years, they never went down the "drunk on derivatives" path that the rest of the financial/insurance industry did, and today, they survive while AIG resides in the govt-funded ICU.

Today, I owe the survival of the company, and by extension, the survival of my pension, to the Spitzer crackdown, because if it had not happened, and the excessive scrutiny over those subsequent years had not been there, the company would have "done an AIG".

When you acquire first-hand exposure to stuff like this, get back to me.

How about what happened to Arthur Andersen consulting when Spitzer went after them? News stories about shredding documents on Enron and a political bonanza for Spitzer- but 100,000 people lost their jobs.

And those document shredding stories? Well, when a management consulting firm works on a project, often there are a lot of blind alleys that are part of the path to the final deliverable- but the customer never sees them. So the lawyers of the consulting firm have a standing policy that all documents that are not related to the deliverable must be shredded, because to allow prosecutors to dig them out extends the legal battles that can result. Lawyers from the Justice Department approved this policy so that when the news stories broke showing employees at Arthur Andersen shredding documents relating to Enron- there was phony outrage on Spitzer's part. The shredding of those documents was standard procedure at these consulting firms- procedures which the Justice Dept. had signed off on.

That Spitzer is a hypocrite about keeping a young mistress? Goes without saying- but he's a hypocritical creep out of the bedroom as well.

And note- I happily voted for Obama and will again....but I can't stand Spitzer.

Sam
