What would be the difference to you between having 55 billion dollars or 75 billion dollars? No right or wrong answers. But I think that the longer you think about it, the more you end up with one answer in particular.

With $55B I could buy a part of GM and alot of it's subsidiaries and spinoffs, ancillary suppliers. Probably enough to get into the market. The other $20B would go to modernize, procure workers and materials. If not for the other $20B I would have to go public, and I would prefer not to do that. T ETA : I don't mean stock. I mean buy the plants, the factories.

Personally, and this is purely from a personal perspective, I would say there is no difference. But on a personal basis, I would be unable to distinguish between $75bn and 0.00005 x $75bn. This doesn't mean I don't know the difference between the numbers - it just means that the difference is meaningless to me.

In other words if you're only going two miles away, what's the difference between having a full tank of gas or a half a tank ? (unless you got a real gas guzzler) But it's still not really correct thinking. I am out of ground black pepper. Know why ? I forgot to get some the other day. It was such a big container, I can't believe it was empty. Now I have to grind pepper. In times of famine you have no choice but to cut back, but in times of fortune if you cut back, times of famine might never come. I want every last dime I can get. If I hit the lottery today (no I didn't play, it's a sucker bet) what would I do ? Nothing. I would talk to my banker tomorrow and figure out the best strategy to keep the money. And of course I know he wants it. If my bank balance was $14,974,902 I would not even buy store boughten cigarettes, nor expensive beer. Nice things ? Fukit they just get wrecked eventually. And I am alreadt sick of T bone steak, shrimp, lobster, chicken and anyone who tastes like it and of course filet mignon. I wouldn't buy a car, I would put new tires on the one I got. I might get another PC. If I won ten million bucks right now, nobody would ever know unless I told them. T

If someone gave me 'just' $3m tomorrow, I could retire comfortably and I'd still be able to give more than half of it away and not notice. Well, the difference between a mansion with 55 rooms vs 75 rooms is 20 rooms. It's all relative. Someone making 100K a year could have the same basic things as someone with 75 billion. Just on a smaller scale and less extravagent. Smaller boat, smaller house, cheaper vacations and vehicles, etc.

I don't believe the average person can contimplate the concept of having a billion dollars much less those two amounts. When you cannot conceive an amount, to add more of the amount the brain does not process it in actual amounts but instead just a concept. Most people will contemplate it as the difference between 55,000 and 75,000 because that's what they know... and its no where near the same. angel

I thought about the 20 billion difference and I had to ask myself what could I buy with the extra money that would make any difference to me. You almost have to start buying countries to put a dent in it. I think the richest person in the world is worth about 53 billion. I wonder what 20 extra billion would mean to him. He is the richest man in the world. And with the extra 20 billion he would still be the richest. I don't have that kind of money but I figure once you do, making more money would get stale real quick. Money like that brings in more money on it's own. I understand why some of them give away huge amounts of money.

This boils down to something I've been considering for a while. Wealth in and of itself doesn't make you happy, YOU make you happy, or unhappy. Possession is not where the fun is, it's ACTION. And although you own fleets of Rollers, acres in Monaco etc, that's moot. That's mere having. Doing, that's the real satisfaction. And a man can only drive one car at a time, fly one plane, wear one Armani shirt, screw in one bed, feel the sand under his buttocks of just one beach etc. And you can savour the world and oh, about 95% of it's treasures with a LOT less than 55billion.

If I were running a big company, $55 vs $75 billion could make a huge difference. $20b is a lot of jobs that could be created, wages that could be raised, things that could be produced, etc. But for me personally, I think the difference would be me giving $74billion to charity instead of $54billion. Because I just can't imagine what else I'd do with that kind of money. I just don't need it for what I want to do in my life. Edit: Well, with taxes it'd probably be less to charity than that, but you know what I mean...

Good point. In the light of this, I would like to change my answer and say the difference is indeed $20bn, and it is, after all, important.
