Close but no cigar on that Darwin Award.

Thank you for passing this one along, Steven.

By the way, anytime folks see Me talking about fire play, this is not how it's supposed to be done.  [8D]

I have a feeling this story was "played up" a bit by the media for dramatic effect.

It sounds to me that the man that's the subject of story has a gas fireplace and that the pilot light was lit while he was trying to clean it - which is an honest mistake, he forgot to put out the pilot before using an aerosol cleaner. When the aerosol got to the pilot light - whoof, big fireball (which is what the story describes).

I don't think the fireplace was actively burning while he was trying to clean it - it wouldn't have been a "big fireball" in that case, as the flames would have lit the moment he sprayed the can.

It still isn't very bright, but my guess is that is isn't as much of a Darwin award as the media played it up to be.

Sorry, not remembering to turn off the pilot light is stupid. You don't play around with gas.

Not saying it isn't stupid. It is. But it's not as much of a "hurhh durh, I tried to clean a fireplace while it was burning" stupidity that the media made it out to be.

People do make mistakes, believe it or not - he may have been cleaning his mother's fireplace and thought her pilot light wasn't lit, or just forgot. I leave my pilot light off all the time.

That's my only point. It is stupid, but it's also media sensationalism played up for the "what a dumbass" factor.

There is no excuse for stupidity...

Raven, I make mistakes. But we don't take chances with any of the gas appliances. We turn off the valves and when we discovered that we were missing a main shut off valve, we got out the tech first thing to install it. There are things you can cut corners on and things you can't. Change a light switch while live, sure. Play with the main panel live? No way. The risk factor is too great not to take the two minutes necessary to check.

But of course the media played it up, that's how they keep themselves in business.
