Jaybeee -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/26/2010 1:12:30 PM)

Ovaries.

littlewonder -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/26/2010 1:33:16 PM)

wonders what that makes a woman after she's had a hysterectomy

We think there is a certain energetic "feel" that separates male and female genders while it is biology that separates male and female sexes. (Gender and sex are not the same thing.)  The gender separate is more than looks or role or any one defining trait. We are a woman because We "feel" like a woman... there is a particular kind of energy, yin, that We have. Though, there are times when Our yang is more prevalent. We are much more apt to feel "predatory" in that state, though that's not necessarily what being male is always about.

I read the man thread. The fist thought I had was: Are those things that makes a male a man or are those things that are expected of a grownup? I can't remember one thing that I wouldn't use to define a grownup.

So what is it that defines a woman as woman or a man as a man? If I look at society I would say society expects the man to be the first line of defense for a family and the woman the last line of defense.

A little off-topic:
This also shows some things that I always disliked about english. It is a male centric language. Add some letter to male or man and you get the feminine words. Of course this is a mans view. A woman might say that some letters were removed ;-)
The german words don't build uppon each other. Mann => man, Frau => woman.
"Man" is also often used instead of human. In german it would be "Mensch". This makes it even harder to see if you are talking about male or human.
So when it comes to the "If" poem the last sentence should be "And - which is more - you'll be a GROWNUP/HUMAN my son!"

I'm glad someone else brought this up. I was rather troubled by the "man" thread, and by extension an attribution of genderless virtues as defining characteristics of masculinity. If qualities like "having a conscience" are seen as innately male, then it's a sad, sad reflection on the sexist thought that permeates society, whether people are conscious of it or not.

jujubeeMB -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/26/2010 10:03:07 PM)

Said it in the man thread, and I'll say it here: if you feel you're a woman, you're a woman. End of story. There is nothing unique to either gender across the board, so no generalizations.

Those can be removed.

Vagina is more universal.

DMFParadox -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 2:05:08 AM)

On a per-unit basis, I agree with jujubee. But sociologically and biologically, there are distinct trends.

Women relate differently; they are not as competitive, and when they are it's in different ways. Competition and especially criticism is more often seen as a personal assault than for what it is, situational bias. That is, they hate being bagged on and see it as a personal assault except when it turns them on. [8|] There are significant differences in how women process hormones, which sorts of things attract their eyes, dietary needs, the way they learn (men and boys learn and respond more than women do through specific challenge and adversity; women learn are able to absorb more information without challenging it, which is a good part of why young girls make better students.) Brain sizes and structures are different, sexual attractors are different, and the ways a mother passes genes on to a daughter is drastically different than the male version, the Y chromosome.

sunshinemiss -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 2:17:36 AM)

I've always thought the "If" poem by Kipling was really about being an adult rather than being a man.

best, sunshine

Actually, the German language uses "Mann" to denote a person (or people) the way English uses "One" or "They", so....

"How is someone supposed to run his business under these circumstances?"
is
"Wie soll Mann sein Geschäft unter diesen Umstände fuhren?"

DMFParadox -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 11:51:21 AM)

So does English, we just also use it to denote a male human. Since the word's overloaded, people get confused and think it's always gender bias. It's not; the two uses converged from different etymological points.

Ha, your right. So german isn't perfect either.

But a little correction. It is "man" not "Mann". The big difference to english is that there is a clear distinction between the written "man" and "Mann". So you can at least figure out which one is meant when it is written. Whereas there is none between man (male) and man (human) in english. Example from this thread:
quote:

"What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god."

Does he mean a male or a human?

But to get to the original question. The real question is what is the difference between a man and a woman?

This.  Which explains why hausboy keeps getting offended in the man thread.  I feel I am a woman, and am fortunate enough to have been born female.  He feels he is a man, but stated that he was not born male.  I may be making assumptions here, but I am quite sure he did not one day say to himself, hey, I'm very strong and protective, I must be a man, I'll go have a sex change.

You are what you feel you are.  Simple, really.

Buzzzz -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 12:30:30 PM)

to me, sensuality, curves . long hair (not trying to be misogyn over here).nuturing behavior ..

81song -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 12:43:13 PM)

Its a very complex. I mean on one hand when I saw your post  was thinking hips. And yes there are all those outside physical kind of things. On the other hand women and more to the point Dommes have this well, maybe a mystical thing about them sometimes. I am still trying to figure that one out.

DMFParadox -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 12:50:30 PM)

It is complex, but there's nothing mystical about it. That's hippie talk right there. Science, dammit! SCIENCE

81song -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 12:56:40 PM)

No,that is just the way I guess I look at many things. Maybe its the left over ex monk thing but its the way my brain works.

DMFParadox -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 12:58:28 PM)

Zen buddhist here. Science works pretty well with that, too.

sexyred1 -> RE: What makes a woman a woman? (12/27/2010 1:18:54 PM)

OP, the answers you will receive on your question will probably not shed any signficant light on this topic, unless you just did it for fun.

There are those who will chime in with their pat answers and philosophical sexist crap and then there are those like me, who answer, as I did in the what makes a man a man thread, who will say that you are what you perceive you are and that the most desirable traits that one can have are not gender specific.
