I really don't know.

I *feel* like a person....I know I'm female because I have female bits and have had babies and physically operate like a female but I don't *feel* like anything other than a person.

I'd actually decided to be a boy when I was a child and it was a bit annoying to get boobs and periods. Faced with the unrelenting tide of *girldom*, I tried to be a girl.......lol

Of course at some point I found that I could just be *me*.

I read the man thread. The fist thought I had was: Are those things that makes a male a man or are those things that are expected of a grownup? I can't remember one thing that I wouldn't use to define a grownup.

So what is it that defines a woman as woman or a man as a man? If I look at society I would say society expects the man to be the first line of defense for a family and the woman the last line of defense.

A little off-topic:
This also shows some things that I always disliked about english. It is a male centric language. Add some letter to male or man and you get the feminine words. Of course this is a mans view. A woman might say that some letters were removed ;-)
The german words don't build uppon each other. Mann => man, Frau => woman.
"Man" is also often used instead of human. In german it would be "Mensch". This makes it even harder to see if you are talking about male or human.
So when it comes to the "If" poem the last sentence should be "And - which is more - you'll be a GROWNUP/HUMAN my son!"

Yes, but what you leave out is that German is possibly even more "male-centric" a lot of the female forms are simply adding -in, in most cases the vowel changes to an umlaut + in as a suffix and Mensch (human) is male...

It was fun to post it but I found it odd I was able to more readily have an answer for the man thread than the woman thread. And you probably nailed it with the desirable traits. Man/woman, male/female, masculine/feminine....are they terms that are becoming obsolete? Maybe so and maybe rightfully so.

Yes, but this is only done when the noun is male (the article of the noun is "der"). I never understood why some things are female or male. For instance: the fork => female, the knife => neuter, the spoon => male. I can't come up with a female noun that is changed to male right now. How to think about that.

What irritates me in english is that man is often used instead of human. Like in: "All man are created equal."

But enough of the talk about the languages. It is just something that bothers me. In english and in german. Lets go on with the original topic.

it's hard for me to think in terms of man/woman...it's a lot easier for me to think in terms of masculine/feminine, or male/female. for instance, i don't particularly feel like a "woman," but i absolutely feel female and feminine. male/female i tend to think of as a yin/yang sort of energy, and it has nothing to do with the physical equipment with which one is born. i have come across plenty of biological women who were all male to me, because they exuded masculine energy. it's a hardness, a solid bearing, a certain confidence emitted from their aura. feminine energy to me is softness, compassion, internal fortitude, delicateness.

as a female, i don't think it's required of me to meet some societal measure of "grown-upness." in that sense i could never hope to qualify as a "woman." but imo, it's the balance brought about by feminine energy against masculine that prevents the world from spinning into irreparable chaos (at like, year 1).

Between the two threads one could concur that my femininity/womanhood is dangerously close to becoming manhood.

Somehow I am not at all worried.

The small minds never cease to surprise me.

Latigress, no. I'm pretty sure I encapsulated in that thread the parts of life that are distinctly not encouraged in women, but are through various means encouraged in men. Except for being a good liar; that's pretty universal.

In this one, I covered a few of the many, many, many biological differences.

Treating men like they're women lacking tits is a disservice to all. Equally true, women are not men lacking cocks. There are fundamental psychological, sociological and strategic differences that everybody is too much of a pussy to talk about (pun motherfucking intended) because they're uncomfortable and icky and require self-awareness that most people are too fucking blind to participate in. Especially women; because they keep the tactical advantage as long as nobody says anything. Hey we're all the same double rainbows! But in the long run, men and women both lose.

Men and women? Not. The. Same.

As for the rest of this thread, why doesn't somebody pull the same stunt that happened in the guys thread, and quote famous douches being better bullshit artists than anyone here could ever be? Here, I'll start.

"Women cannot complain about men anymore until they start getting better taste in them.  ~Bill Maher"

Underlined for uadulerated bullshit. The only people who lose are those who keep perpetuating this crap about the war between the sexes.

Oh wait, is that what you meant by strategic and tactical? War analogies? Chess?

You mean everywhere here on CM, or everywhere online? One of those I might take credit for. The other one, well... it's a new world brother, and we're all having to re-evaluate what being dickish really means.

Dude....
You STARTED this thread.  If you didn't want a dialogue, why did you put the question out there to begin with?  What Makes a Man a Man thread has you as the original poster.  Now we've got, lessee, what makes a woman a woman.... what makes a dom a dom...what makes a cat a cat (I like that one, actually)...

So that means... you initiated this big pot of shit, stirred it....and now....I can't tell...are you complaining about it?

Well, holy crap. That must make you..... a man!  question answered.  next thread, please.

Actually, the only thing I've concluded from threads like these is that each person's ideals stem from their own self view. If they view their own exteriour as their most important features and greatest value, they also view others similarly. That will be the measure of others.

If a person places greater value on the inner person, the exteriour will have lesser importance and they will give more focus on the inner person, not only of themselves but also in others. The existance of dicks, vaginas, ability to procreate and how, breasts, hair length, etc......will matter much less in the determination. If they value a dick over a brain, then the measure of a man will be the dick and a woman the vagina to slide it into. If they value money and it's uses above all, then they will measure a person based upon similar.

I don't think one measure is more valid or less so, to the individuals using that particular stick to measure with. The key is to be certain the people you are measuring use a similar ruler. Otherwise your measurements will be useless. It is equally important to remember that our personal measurements are of little importance to many others with different rulers. When one brags about money, another will roll their eyes, the person bragging will measure that the eye roller is simply jealous.... wrongly. They are forgetting that their measurement is personal, not universal. What one sees as a vital component another may see as irrelevant or even a hindrance. It is a fool that forgets this.

Hi all. The man thread made me start thinking about this side. what do you guys think?

Something I can't explain.

Having been around male-to-female transgenders who WERE women - having met, spoken, interacted and never had a clue they started life with a penis you will never be able to convince me that those weren't women - I truly can't list anything.

Gender isn't physical. There is a maleness or femaleness that people can pick up on. It's more than clothes and DNA. I couldn't even begin to define it.

I can. But it's icky and animalistic, reduces people to base motives, is based on complicated analysis of many, many correlating studies and data points, and offends people's sensibilities.

It's like explaining magnets to juggalos.

But I'll tell you this much: mainstream Americans better figure it out pretty fucking fast. A crisis is coming, and it won't be pretty for anybody.

Well, the trite answers are either "squidgy bits." Or "sugar and spice and everything nice."
