We ration healthcare already. We just don't ration it rationally. In the private sector, it is rationed in a way that benefits the shareholder. In the public sphere, we ration it by some arbitrary age, giving million dollar surgeries to people in their 11th hour, while failing to preventatively treat illness earlier in younger people who can live long enough to overcome illness and 'pay it back', make some contribution to the GDP. Other countries do ration properly, invest earlier, and get a return on the investment. We bury all our public money right along with the body. We get NO return on the public money. It's American Exceptionalism alright. Exceptionally stupid, that is. I just don't get people like willbe, people who complain about government spending in one breath and then who adamantly defends his grandma's right to open-ended public entitlements in the next breath, in a "how dare anybody 'death panel' her" kinda way.... You can't complain about entitlement spending, and then assert that cutting off that very same spending is a 'death panel' attack against grandma. Isn't that an act of attacking one's own beliefs? Medicare and Social Security were invented when the elderly truly were the poor class. Today, the retirement generation is the wealthiest class. Today's retirees also okay'ed the destruction of the high wage jobs base that built their very wealth, keeping the same wealth potential from the next generation, all for the quick boost in their invested 401Ks right now. "Going out with a financial bang", they are.
