Scientists have established a link between the colder winter being experienced in the U.K and the melting of the Arctic Sea Ice. An analysis of the ice free regions of the Arctic Ocean has found that the higher temperatures experienced due to climate change may paradoxically mean that the northern hemisphere has increased the chances of colder winters in the years to come. Some climate Scientists have concluded that the 30 year retreat of the Arctic ice sheets has changed the wind patterns over much of northern hemisphere, leading to cold Arctic winds being funneled over the UK, replacing the normally mild Westerly air stream that normally dominates the country in winter. The study carried out in 2009, before that years bitterly cold winter period, is all the more prescient because of it's predictions that snowy winters will be three times more likely over the coming years then in previous decades. The researchers used computer models to assess the impact of the disappearing Arctic sea ice, particularly in the areas of the Barents and Kara seas north of Scandinavia and Russia. Their models found that , as the ice cap over the ocean disappeared, this allowed the heat of the water to escape into the much colder atmosphere, creating an area of high pressure surrounded by clockwise-moving winds that sweep down from the polar regions over Britain and Europe. Dr Vladimir Petoukhov, who carried out the study at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Impact Research in Germany, said the simulations showed that the disappearing ice is likely to have widespread and unpredictable impacts on the climate of the Northern hemisphere. - The Essential Daily Briefing from the Indepdent, 24th December, 2010.
