Did New York snow crews sabotage clean-up?

quote:

NEW YORK (AFP) – New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is investigating whether the real problem during this week's blizzard wasn't snow, but sabotage by the crews meant to be cleaning it up.

With the Big Apple still reeling from officially the sixth biggest snow storm in its history, City Council member Dan Halloran says sanitation workers told him their department deliberately worked slowly in revenge for budget cuts.

In his bombshell revelations, Halloran told CNN on Friday that three municipal workers told him after Monday's blizzard that supervisors instructed them to take it easy in the midst of the crisis.

"'Don't worry if you miss a couple of streets,'" they said they were told. "'The city doesn't care about us, so don't worry about them.'"

If these allegations are proven true, it speaks volumes about how municipal employees tend to forget just who exactly they work for.

They work for themselves, everyone does. There is nothing wrong with retracting your services if you feel you are getting a raw deal. If the city can afford to take on temporary workers to replace them then that is the risk they take in declining to work.

Fire the fuckers. Oops, you can't they're union.

pahunkboy -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 1:48:09 PM)

Wouldn't they manage to do their own streets?

DomKen -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 1:51:58 PM)

What a load of bollocks.

The problem was the deputy mayor changed the snow plan and screwed up. The claim about the unions is coming from a single city councilman who is a political ally of the mayor and the deputy mayor. Bloomberg is grabbing hold of it in a pathetic attempt to save his political career.

It could be worse. Look at what happened in the UK.  Broken pipes- 40,000 out of water, broken boilers... and the Heathrow fiasco.

soul2share -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 2:03:07 PM)

Unfortunately, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this story was true.  It doesn't indicate which union they belong to, but if it's AFSCME or the Teamsters, this is EXACTLY their mindset.  I've been stuck in AFSCME before, and they are useless as a union.  I've seen them demand higher raises for the workers, only to have layoffs later down the line because budgets couldn't support the extra costs.  Quite frankly, unions are putting way too many people OUT of work rather than saving hteir jobs.

TheHeretic -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 2:12:46 PM)

The glitch I see with this story is the lack of corroborating evidence. Youngsters have a way of dragging their parents down to watch snowplows. I want to know if there is some cell-phone video of the alleged highblading, and equipment sitting for hours. It would be pretty obvious to anybody who knew what they were looking at, and hearing. Lets see the logs on damage to manhole covers, too.

Given my opinion of unionized public employees, and New Yorkers, I'm inclined to find this plausible, but I'd prefer to have some solid evidence. As a wise old man used to say, never automatically attribute to malice, that which could easily be plain old incompetence.

First off as a New Yorker I am offended at the cheap shot you fired.....but in the spirit of the holidays I will let it pass....Incompetence was the deal here .Ineffectual execution, which when one considers the cities long history of dealing with snow is sort of unexcusable, hence all the criticism(deserved) that Bloomberg is taking.

Likewise.  Although DomKen's story is plausible as well.

DomKen -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 4:27:18 PM)

Look into it. The rest of the city council has been calling out the deputy mayor, former mayor of Indianaopolis, and Bloomberg. The fact is the deputy mayor changed the snow plan to favor Manhattan and to not start plowing and salting the main streets city wide when the snow started falling.

There are dozens of eyewitness reports of the outer burrough streets not being plowed during the actual snowstorm.

Lucylastic -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 5:44:10 PM)

why is one party less liable to lie their arses off. There are probably a bit of each. I have no doubt city workers are pissed off with their treatment, and  ability to be malicious but nothing absolutely NOTHING supposes the "bosses" can lie even better to cover their asses,

Real0ne -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 6:07:11 PM)

everyone knows public officials only lie when their lips are moving

pahunkboy -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 7:36:00 PM)

Chicago would never mess things up like this.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 10:48:52 PM)

nevermind

TheHeretic -> RE: "The city doesn't care about us, so... (1/1/2011 11:39:38 PM)

What cheap shot, Mike? I lived in the city long enough to form a lasting impression of the working class social culture.

Ken's offering seems pretty plausible as well, even complimentary to the alleged job action. There's nothing quite like a new boss who thinks he's a fucking expert, to royally piss off the guys who wear boots to work.

For what it's worth, I still live in the city and I was in bar on Thursday night and bumped into a couple of guys I know from the Teamsters and they pretty much said the same thing - that the delay in plowing the outer buroughs was part of a work slowdown.

Whether they're dealing the straight skinny or just repeating something they've heard, I couldn't say but I have to admit, it wouldn't surprise me.

Ken is right, Bloomberg is an asshole. In fact I think just about all NYC mayors I can remember were assholes. Don't challenge Ken on facts, he always has them, it's the conclusions and interpretations that cause the disagreements. What's more I can't see how a Bloomberg still holds that chair in the first place, are elections even real or what ?

Moving right along now, people are generally slackerds, and when you are a small cog in a very large machine it is hard to see the connection between customer service and income. Then you get to public services and even the hint of the connection is gone. We have a contract. That means we can cruise the plow out 24 miles away to get a pizza and be back an hour late from lunch, drunk, and get paid for it. Our bigboy has already extracted the money for this so our checks are good whether we do it or not.

And that my friends is what happened to the good old days.

I once had a union tell me I couldn't go to work.   They met Mr 45 cal pistol and decided that maybe I can.   I put nothing against them.

There you go!

A brilliant solution to our unemployment problems, everyone just needs to get paid less.

We'll have all the wage-earners take pay cuts and all the employers take less profit so more people can be hired.

And I'm sure you are going to be the first in line to volunteer to work for less.
