I agree with Navy spokesman Cmdr. Chris Sims:

It's clear from the videos that Honors had already gotten complaints when some of them were made. "Over the years I've gotten several complaints about inappropriate material during these videos, never to me personally but, gutlessly, through other channels," he said in the introduction to the video posted by the newspaper.

In the same segment, Honors uses a derogatory term for gays.

Next comes a sequence of what appear to be outtakes in which Honors and others curse, followed by clips in which he and others are shown making hand motions that mimic masturbation.

Honors segues to the next segment by saying, "Finally let's get to my favorite topic ... chicks in the shower." Next are shown clips of pairs of women and a pair of men pretending to shower together. No nudity is shown, but the men's and women's bare shoulders imply they are nude.

Other clips in the video show a man in drag and a mock rectal examination.

Navy spokesman Cmdr. Chris Sims said in a statement sent to The Associated Press that the videos "were not acceptable then and are not acceptable in today's Navy."

Executive officers and other leaders "are charged to lead by example and are held accountable for setting the proper tone and upholding the standards of honor, courage and commitment that we expect sailors to exemplify," he said.

I served in the USAF 20 years ago and it was the most openly bigoted, racist, homophobic, and misogynistic workplace I have ever encountered. Note: I encountered these attitudes in enlisted personnel, not officers.

Good point kalikshama.

Is this the kind of leadership the pompous be-medalled brass are so fond of claiming they exercise? Is this an example that we might find acceptable in public life, private enterprise or society in general?

The appalling judgement and bigotry the officer in question exhibited suggest that he has got what it takes to run a small chicken farm in some very remote place. And little else. An obscure valley isolated deep in the Rockies springs into mind.

That such an insecure moron, whose judgement is clearly deranged by hate, might be in charge of nuclear weapons leaves one struggling to comprehend. For him to retain his command in the face of the new pro-queer policies tells us that the policies have been adopted strictly for show purposes only.

He has not retained his command. He was fired.

WASHINGTON – The Navy brusquely fired the captain of the USS Enterprise on Tuesday, more than three years after he made lewd videos to boost morale for his crew, timing that put the military under pressure to explain why it acted only after the videos became public.

He was fired because he committed the most vile, low down, crime known to humanity... being an embarrassment to his superiors.

Which can be grounds for termination at any job, not just a federal one. As a lawyer, would you take on this case as an unlawful termination?

OK.  Where's that post that was made recently when somebody was asking Me why I think there are some folks in the military who have anti gay sentiments?  People who think these kinds of things don't exist need to open their eyes.

That somebody was me and I never said that anti-gay sentiment doesn't exist, either in the military or in the country as a whole.

What I pointed out was the Pentagon survey found a vast majority of military personnel did not have a problem serving alongside gays.  Which directly contradicted those on that thread who suggested the repeal of DADT would create major problems within the military.

To suggest this is evidence of those problems goes way beyond trying to stretch a point.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert McGinnis with the Military Readiness Project says the Pentagon questionaire sent to members of the military never asked them directly whether or not they liked Don't Ask Don't Tell. It simply told them DADT was going to be repealed, and asked how they should go about doing it. Then, they only got input from about 25 percent of enlisted troops. On the flip side, the military says it sent the questionaire to half a million troops, and only 115 thousand responded.

Meanwhile, the conservative Family Research Counsel did their own research on ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". They asked 10 thousand soldiers and marines directly if they would feel comfortable serving with openly homosexual troops. 63 percent said no.

I'll let the lawyers decide that. The facts as I see them are that nobody really gave a shit about the videos until they became public and the oversensative whinning crowd began its oversensative whinning... then he was fired.

Family Research Counsel... who has this on the web site.

The Top Ten Myths About Homosexuality

We in the pro-family movement certainly have our own “agenda.” Its elements include: protecting the safety and dignity of human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death; encouraging the practice of sexuality only within the context of marriage between one man and one woman; and promoting the natural family, headed by a married, biological mother and father, as the ideal setting for raising children. We are proud of this “agenda,” and will continue to vigorously pursue it.

By the same token, homosexual activists have a clear agenda as well. It is an agenda that demands the universal acceptance of homosexual acts and relationships—morally, socially, legally, religiously, politically and financially. Indeed, it
calls for not only acceptance, but affirmation and celebration of this behavior as normal, natural, and even as desirable for those who desire it. There is nothing shadowy or secretive about this agenda—in fact, it has become nearly impossible to avoid encountering it.

.........

Homosexual activists would have us believe that the same is true of their homosexuality. They want us to believe that their homosexual “orientation” is something they are born with, cannot choose whether to accept or reject, and cannot change; and that it does no harm (to themselves or to society), while being protected by the principles of the Constitution.

The homosexual movement is built, not on facts or research, but on mythology. Unfortunately, these myths have come to be widely accepted in society—particularly in schools, universities and the media. It is our hope that by understanding what these key myths are—and then reading a brief summary of the evidence against them—the reader will be empowered to challenge these myths when he or she encounters them.

Not to drag that thread into this one (well, I guess I am, sorry OP) I happen to think that any hate based crime will be a major problem in the military.  Not that I think it's going to run rampant, but all it takes is for a few stupid people to make a big mess.

I'm not saying the military is going to be shaken at it's roots and be ineffective in their job of defense.  I'm saying that any increase in violence within ranks (which is bad enough in itself) also has a ripple effect.  It means that time and resources after said violence will end up with sensitivity training, more focus on classes for troops, and so on.  They'll have to investigate how deep the problem runs, etc, etc.

Unlike a lot of folks, I tend to put a lot more weight on what I see and hear for Myself than on reports and studies.   When My husband and I are sitting at lunch and overhear the anti-gay sentiment from the enlisted a few tables over or I catch the jokes they are telling amongst themselves when we're walking by them on post, I put a little more to that than what the official reports are trying to tell Me.
