AnimusRex -> GOP Unable to Cut $00 Billion? (1/4/2011 9:36:15 PM)

Blog post in Hot Air, a rightwing forum...
GOP Backing Away from Promise to Cut $100 Billion?
From the article:
Shouldn’t it be fairly easy to find $100 billion to cut in an annual budget that exceeds $3.5 trillion? Well, yes — except that the GOP’s limiting itself to cutting discretionary spending (Social Security and Medicare are, as ever, completely off-limits) and even within discretionary spending they refuse to touch “security” budgets, i.e. Defense and Homeland Security. That leaves just $500 billion or so for this year to play with, and since, as Rich Lowry noted earlier at the Corner, a good chunk of that will already have been spent by the time the continuing resolution expires in the spring, they’d have to make huge cuts to what’s left in order to get to $100 billion in savings overall.

Hmm...Didn't some asshole here make that very claim only a while back?
Oh yeah...

OK, back to the budget deficit, one of my pet topics.

First, I read the article; it projects that the health care reform will add to the deficit; but take a look at this graph to see what is also adding tremendously to the deficit- namely the Bush tax breaks for the wealthy- that huge orange slice of the graph in the middle.

But I have to ask why when we are talking about the massive government spending and debt, we immediately leap to cutting health care; Here is the current FY 2010 budget numbers (In very round terms, courtesy of Wallstats.com and yes, I know I have listed these several times before)

1. Debt Service 400 Billion
2. Medicare- 600 Billion
3. Social Security- 1 Trillion
4. Defense- 1 Trillion
5. Every other damn thing the Gov't does- 500 Billion
Total= 3.5 Trillion

Income- about 2.1 Trillion (including the 1 Trillion from Social Security payroll tax)

Deficit- 1.4 Trillion

Lets all agree we want to balance the budget. Where do any of you see 1.4 Trillion in cuts? Seriously, take a moment yourself and write out the 5 categories with the numbers you would like to see.

Hot Air....good name for these folks.

You might want to listen to Boehner and not the suppositions (note the ? at the end of the title) of a blogger.

In fairness, Sarah Palin these days has devolved down to little more than a celebrity while John Boehner is an elected representative and will be Speaker of the House of Representatives very shortly. Giving his comments and opinions on what may or may not happen in the next session of Congress more weight than some blogger or Sarah Palin is a reasonable position to have.

joether -> RE: GOP Unable to Cut $00 Billion? (1/5/2011 3:53:22 AM)

I recall in the not so distant past, there was talk of letting the Bush-era tax cuts for the upper 2% of income earners revert from 35% to 39%. This, the economists, predicted, would have generated a pokey '$700 Billion'. Added to AnimusRex's figures above, that would bring income to $2.8 Billion/year. Making it easier for conservatives to argue balancing the budget with a $100 Billion cut. But, as we all know, THAT, would have been the wise decision on the part of the USA. Now, the richer will get rich, the poor/middle class will get poorer, and we'll go further in to debt. Thanks conservatives, for voting in retarded people into office.

This $100 Billion spending cut, was just playing to the crowd. It would not have done a productive thing for the nation or the economy in the long run.

This whole attitude of having hands off towards certain areas pisses me off. If they want to preserve benefits delivered from an area, fine.  But if they want to preserve spending, they need an attitude adjustment.  The attitude is that the more they fund an area, the more they love it.  They sure haven't convinced me that federal spending is as lean as it could be.  And if it's not... I'd rather see bloat cut from a program I agree with, that benefits cut from one I don't.

You apparently don't know much about John Boehner.

This is a man who has been a corporate lobbyist's dream since his days in the Ohio legislature.

He's never met a campaign contribution he didn't like.

Watch the video and Boehner will explain to you in his own words how he was a very, very bad boy and he promises to never, never, ever do anything like that again.
