Kinkypupper -> RE: ProDomm?? (10/2/2004 8:10:38 PM)

i also think that "term" is WAY over used.. specificlly tho a "pro-dom" would be one who earns a income by being a dom thus others PAY them. but who decides this "title" except the over inflated ego of self.. that is what i beleave..

I agree with kinkypupper that the term is bandied about far too frequently in online circles. However, among the R/L members of the BDSM community the term does typically mean a bit more than simply being payed for one's services as a dominant (as this can also include hustlers, kept mistresses, and "money dommes", as well as gifted amateurs who have recently begun to make the transition into professional status).

A Pro Domme (I have never actually encountered a reference to a masculine professional dominant, although I would not be surprised if they exist) typically has a private dungeon where she can meet clients discreetely. Very often such a professional either has submissive assistants or has access to assistants who can take a subordinate role (often through a reciprocal agreement with other pros in the area). Being professionals, they have certian standards of appearance, upkeep, and conduct which they meticulously mantain, as much for the prestige of it as for the fact that an unkempt or slovenly domme will make the wrong impression and thus scare off the more lucrative clients. In the circles I have orbited through, ProDomme is not the least bit derogatory, and thus does not carry the negative connotations of "exotic dancer" or "escort" (or the less flattering synonyms of these terms), although such respect within the SM community may not be so readily conferred in other areas.

Generally speaking, a true Pro Domme is not given such status early on in life, as it takes many years to reach the level of respectability this title implies. I have never known a true Pro Domme who was younger than 35, and many are significantly older, with decades of experience and a solid reputation within the local community.

The word "Professional" speaks to knowledge and experience, and in this context refers to a Domme who is applying this knowledge and experience in the Lifestyle for some profit, usually monetary, but not limited to that. How much knowledge and experience can a 20 year old have? Overall I would say not much, but then there may be one or two that may. By comparison, the percentage that do are very very small comparitively. My personal experience at age 20 was far more advanced than that of someone who perhaps became curious and start exploring the Lifestyle in their early teens, since I was actually raised in a Lifestyle family.

Another factor to consider would be their knowledge of, and skill with tools/toys/equipment. Their ability to handle emergency situations, physically and emotionally. Panic/ignorance can kill, or at the very least affect the quality of someone's life as they know it, for the rest of their life.

I am not a Pro Domme, but in my opinion knowledge and experience take time, effort, and sincerity in application. Respect, of course, is earned.

Semantics. Common knowledge equates Pro with cash. I have 2 Pro Domme friends. Neither give 2 shits about the lifestyle or have specific interests in power exchange in more than the basic "exchange for service" terms. In Ma'am Mary's own terms " i get to beat the shit out of a married guy and wear cool shoes and get paid for it". In my experience that is more the case than not. some in our lifestyle consider pros an unfortunate by product. My friends are cool though, and if your gonna be a scum bag enough to cheat on your wife then you deserve to get the shit beat out of you. It just sucks though when the cash could be used other places...

sub4hire -> RE: ProDomm?? (11/14/2005 12:47:27 PM)

More often than not it means someone who is too lazy to work yet has a computer and internet access and found a chat room. Figured out a way to make money off of scamming people. For essentially doing nothing.

There are legitamate pro dominants out there, however they are much fewer than what you see online.

devin6 -> RE: ProDomm?? (11/15/2005 5:12:27 AM)

tough there are many who feel that the monentary relationship does in many ways take away from the realness of the play. i find as a submisive alot of the gain of excitement comes from knowing the person of dominace really enjoys what she or you are doing in the session
