slavetoMsJ -> D/s Elements in The Wheel of Time (Warning: Spoilers) (1/7/2011 1:25:43 AM)

I'm currently on the fifth book of this wonderful series, and have been unable to help but notice that there's much to make a person with certain proclivities prick up his antennae. For example:

--Egwene being enslaved to Renna via an a'dam in The Great Hunt. (For non-WoT readers, an a'dam is a bracelet connected to a collar by a length of chain; it enables the wearer of the bracelet to inflict any sort of pain at all on the wearer of the collar simply by willing it, provided both individuals are gifted in a certain way. Moreover, any pain the owner feels, the slave feels twice over. To temporarily free herself from the encumbrance of the slave, all the owner has to do is take off the bracelet and leave it anywhere she likes; if the slave moves it so much as an inch, she experiences mind-twisting agony.)

--Graendal the Forsaken and her entourage of blissfully obedient, barely-clothed nobles-turned-slaves. (Two days ago, I was reading WoT to try to get my mind off BDSM for a while when Graendal ordered a male slave to his hands and knees and casually perched on his back. That's what gave me the idea to start this thread, actually.)

--Lanfear's laying claim to Rand by biting his neck in the dream world

--Gaebril's enslavement of Queen Morgase through use of the One Power

--Siuan Sanche threatening to punish Mat until he cries for his mother when he pretends not to remember blowing the Horn of Valere

--Faille making Perrin trail her and Loial like a lost puppy in the Ways, as revenge for his earlier attempt to part ways with her

--The Black Ajah's plan to capture and enslave Rand with a device similar to an a'dam

I wonder what a collaboration between Anne Rice and Robert Jordan would have looked like.

You have got to be fucking joking.

A)  Jordan's Wheel of Time series bored the ever-lovin' fuck out of me by the third book.  The fucking things are FULL of filler.  The author spends 25 pages describing how his characters get up in the morning, eat breakfast and saddle the horses.  My mind was so numb after book #3, I felt compelled to stick my finger in a light socket.  That anyone can think these books are epic fantasy is testament to the idea that sci-fi/fantasy nerds will read fucking anything.

B)  D/s is a fundamental formalisation of male/female interactions throughout history.  There is nothing innovative about replicating that.

C)  If Anne Rice and Robert Jordan collaborated, it would involve homosexual undead emo musicians who bore the audience to death by taking 400 pages to get through their first day.

A collabouration would end up with longer, filler length vampire books.
I think you can find Ds or BDSM elements in any book if you really want to.
Personally, I'd take any Rice over WoT but it's ok long cartravel fodder.

I read several of the books when I was younger and vaguely remember one of the women getting spanked. I tried to find that scene at a later date and couldn't be bothered to slog through the rest of the novel.

Also, the women were always crossing their arms under their breasts? The series is pretty popular but I suppose it didn't make much of an impact on me.
