My slave is on the commitee for a fairly good sized event held locally. So I can tell you a bit about how things are run.
#1 the presenter's who go to these events certainly will rememeber what kind of hotel they are held in and the reputation of the event will grow or fail depending on many things but the hotel is certainly one of the things that will rate high on the list.

Most of the events I have been to have been at hotels along the mid level Ramada, Crown Suites, Holliday Inn, etc. Some have been independants but those that have been have been in the general quality range of an Airport Ramada.

They do actually book out Blocks of rooms that they negotiate with the hotel for the special rates the more rooms the event will guarantee for the weekend the better the price the hotel will give. So booking through the specal block helps the event's bottom line a bit because they guaranteed the block of rooms to get the rate.
If they don't sell the rooms then they pay the difference in the special rate for every room in the block.

On rare ocassion I have seen accomidations set at hotels of substandard levels but that is very rare. Remember these events rely on word of mouth and they live or die based on their reputations. So the odds are good that they will be at the small convention hotel level.

The reasons why have been explained several times, so I'll not repeat them.

Actually this isa rather prevalent practice with BDSM groups in the South East where i am from. It is only after signing up for the event that location, directions, etc are sent to attendees. i have never been to an event where the location was in a bad neighborhood or the hotel was a flea trap. It was always done for discretion's sake.

wytchy,
We ran into a similar situation a couple of years ago. We attended the "Folsom Fringe" event, held in a very nice 'mainstream' hotel in San Jose. During the weekend us "freaks" pretty much had the run of the place. Seminars were held during the day in the conference rooms. The HUGE Ballroom served as the play area "dungeon" on Friday and Saturday night.

Sunday is check out day and also the day of the Folsom Street Fair in SF. The organizers of the Fringe arrange for buses to take the attendees from the hotel to the street fair. Most of the attendees dress for the event with a lot of leather, fetish wear, and a LOT of skin. It was in this manner that we were waiting for the buses in front of the hotel.

As it turns out, a fundamental Christian group was checking into the hotel at the same time we were leaving. The looks gave a new definition of "shock & awe!" Everyone waiting for buses couldn't believe how weird those people looked as they walked into the hotel!

That's just precious! One more thing to share from my last time at Ohio Leatherfest is this:

We  also had a "ballroom" reserved on Saturday night for a pony play demonstration. Problem was the "ballroom" was only separated from another "ballroom" by a very weak vinyl partition. There was a wedding party next door and some drunks crashed into the partition (from the wedding party side) and saw the pony play demo. The bride and groom kinda paled a bit.

I would like to think us "pervs" only gave them more ideas to play with, but I'm prolly being optimistic here. [8D]

Edited: I hope this time I caught all the spellings errors. but again, a few prolly slipped through. :)

Serves em right for having such stupid guests! :)

At the Austin Rope Symposium, we shared the convention center with a high school formal dance Sat night and a church service Sun morning.  It was more annoying because there was NO sound buffering and the horrible music they had for the dance made it impossible to hear the lecturers.

At Dark Odyssey Winter Fire this year there was a beautiful winter bridal party that went through the lobby, and they seemed too pre-occupied with themselves to care about lots of people in leather.

Has anyone else seen a BDSM event that offers a discount if one books a hotel room, but doesn't tell which hotel or the room rates?

That's how it works at one of the events we attend as well, we don't get the hotel info until everything is confirmed. From what I understand they used to give it out but had someone contact a local newpaper about the event and the press showed up and stuck around. The hotel wouldn't let them hold it there anymore and a lot of people wouldn't show up for it because of the publicity. Now it's all "hush hush".
