Most recent update... she opened her eyes. Its not only a blessing to her friends and family... its truly a miracle.

TheHeretic -> RE: Arizona Democrat Congresswoman and 11 others shot (1/12/2011 10:12:03 PM)

Tazzy, I hope she makes the kind of miraculous recovery that will allow her to go back to serving her district in D.C.

Of course, I will be reserving the right to make the odd crack about brain-damaged Dems in the House if it happens that way.

I would like to hope that there are other voices out there that see things for what they are and will try to change them. This came from NPR......The only problem is that the Republican in question lost to Rand Paul.....shame

The latest update I have just heard was even better.  On one of the news channels I listened to last night, one of her Dr's said he expects a 101% recovery, which has been a concern for me, is how much brain damage she will have from this.  Her progress is so encouraging.  ....

TUCSON, Ariz. — U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has passed a "major milestone" on her recovery from a gunshot wound to the head, doctors said Thursday.

The Arizona congresswoman has been sitting up, dangling her legs on the edge of the hospital bed and moving her limbs in response to commands. That's after she spontaneously opened her eyes during visits with her colleagues Wednesday night. She is able to lift both of her legs on command and is yawning and starting to rub her eyes, doctors said.
"She's becoming more aware of her surroundings," trauma chief Dr. Peter Rhee said during a news conference at the University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., Thursday.

The next milestone will be removing her breathing tube, and perhaps have her sit in a chair on Friday, said Rhee, who has treated soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Doctors want to make sure Giffords doesn't regress and are watching for pneumonia and blood clots.
Six people were killed when gunman opened fire outside a Safeway store in Tucson on Saturday. Giffords, who investigators say was the primary target, was among 13 people wounded. Giffords remains critical and four patients are in fair condition. One patient was being discharged Thursday.

"Everybody is making fantastic progress forward," Rhee said. Giffords' neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Lemole, said after five days of pushing for caution, "We're wise to acknowledge miracles."

Makes one wonder if making handguns illegal would work better than making drugs illegal has!

They ARE illegal in the District of Columbia (Wasington DC). I don't think it is a coincidence that DC has a higher violent crime rate than any of the 50 states.

With exception to our "fearless leaders" and a few touristy areas, the rest of DC is a low income ghetto of epic proportions(did a campaign there a few years ago, gawd was it a nightmare) . Wouldn't matter much if there were or weren't guns there, the forces that drive the crimes there would still continue to do their thing.

At least ours earned their brain damage, what's your guy's excuse lol

My take on that is a bit different Pyro ,"ours" was inflicted with whatever damage has been done(naturally I hope none,or as minimal as possible given her injuries)....theirs is of the "self-inflicted thru ignorance and arrogence" variety.

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: Arizona Democrat Congresswoman and 11 others shot (1/13/2011 8:53:18 PM)

Thanks for the link.  It's so sad, she attempting to move toward a more peaceful dialogue, to suffer what she has.

I have high hopes, because she's relatively young, and seems to be making strides already in her recovery.     M

Pyro, have you lived in/near DC?    I do know that lower SW area, is very poor, and I didn't even want to drive there.     I haven't been in a few years, but DC is one of my favorite cities in the world, because I literally met people from all over the world.    When I lived in Alexandria, I used to go out in DC 2-4 times/week, and it's the one city I've partied in at different venues, and never once saw a fight break out in a club.    I'm not saying it never happened, but I never felt unsafe in DC, except the lower SW area.    I know there is a very poor, drug ridden segment there, where the majority of the crimes happen.

My dad had a gun, but I never saw it.   I'm ambivalent about gun ownership.    I abhor violence, but feel that if one is attacked in one's home, one ought to defend oneself to the best of one's abilities.    However, the farce that has occurred since Obama took office is barbaric, and makes the US look really pathetic, and unevolved to the world (IMO).    People packing for rallies, to threaten politicians, and anyone who disagrees with them?     Is all of that bullying, posturing, and threatening of lives necessary?     Obama has not changed any gun laws, but ever since the threat of his election became eminent, people have lost their minds, and dignity.

This is insanity, and will lead the US straight to hell (self destruction) if it doesn't stop.    And even if you are into guns, why would anyone be allowed 31 rounds of ammunition in public?    For hunting, in parks, maybe;    Otherwise, limit the amount of killing one person can do for Gods sake!    M

Media commentators here are proclaiming Pres Obama's speech in AZ as a triumph that opens the way to perhaps overcoming/healing the divisions that polarise US society and politics at the moment.

Hopefully without being too partisan, how do forum readers feel about that assessment? Will the US succeed in turning the challenge of Gifford's tragedy into an opportunity for progress?

I would absolutely love to believe that all the lies, and hair on fire behavior is going to go away.    It's a sad fact, that Republicans/conservatives haven't realized that Obama is very much one of them, thus far in his leadership.    What I believe however, is that everyone will behave for about a week, but thereafter, it's going to be business as usual, once this tragedy is no longer in-your-face present and horrible.

Did you hear about the stats on gun possession the day after that shooting?   Massive increase in sales all over the US.

People are irrational, angry, and buying guns.    I don't see how this is going to be a good thing in the future.     M

I am extremely distrustful of politicians: whenever they open their mouths, they lie. Whenever someone tries to act "I am holier than thou", I suspect that he is guilty.

No, but USA citizens can. I have already told you how: insist that the president, being the one who has accountability for everything that happens in the USA, abdicate. And fire the top of the FBI and decrease their budget. That will cause politicians and the FBI to behave better.

Louve00 -> RE: Arizona Democrat Congresswoman and 11 others shot (1/14/2011 4:00:09 AM)

I also feel business (and behaviors...and feelings...and spewing ridicule will be back to normal in a week or so).  Its the nature of the political beast.  As far as gun control, I think Chris Rock's idea is a better way to handle it.  [8D]

Never lived anywhere other then south cali lol
but when I was doing the campaigns, we(the petitioners) were looking for people who lived full time in DC and were registered to vote there, that meant the shit ends of town since most of the respectable parts are for visitors, people whom work there but don't live there, ect.

even most of the upper class who live there aren't registered to vote there, for what ever reasons(mostly cause they called someplace else home, and/or they wanted to be represented on a fed level).

as for the clubs and such, I'd call that a "touristy area", considering (like you had said) how many out of country/state people spend much time working(and playing)in the DC, but would never call it their home(like when I was there lol).

It's unlikely to stick.
There's little doubt that Obama has come out of this looking a lot better than caribou Barbie, but sadly that's far more likely to lead to further Republican snits than any bridge building...

The immediate effects of Obama's speech/Palin's speech:

1. Obama appeared Presidential again.  His image has been of some guy trying to squeeze in some bill or other for a while.  This gave him a chance to simply be a speaker rising above it all, like Reagan used to do.
2. Palin screwed up big time.  She used her usual devices - a speech all about her and belittling the media.  It was inappropriate for this occasion, and made her look small.  She decided to schedule her talk just before Obama's, undoubtedly figuring to steal some of his thunder, but evidently didn't realize that they'd be compared and that she'd come out so much behind.  Note that she's been silent since - which is huge, since her entire modus operandi is to make as much noise as possible in the media.
3. Everyone's showing restraint in talking.  Nice, but the forces that caused the rancor in the first place have not gone away.

Thanks for your responses guys!

It seems there's a little optimism accompanied by a rather large dose of scepticism. Oh well it is politics! Who could blame any one for being sceptical?

Two things to be really positive about:
1. Giffords seems to be on the road to recovery. Let's hope it's a full and complete one; and
2. The caribou Barbie (great nick Moonhead!) seems to have gotten her antlers in a tangle!

Those two ought to be enough to put a smile on any sensible face.

Every day is a plus, of course, but let us await another two weeks before concluding that she will live.

I'm surprised you've not heard that one already, tweakabelle: it's been doing the rounds since she managed to wreck Sorebutt's bid for the Presidency back in '08.

FR

Jesus.  This event and its aftermath - including this thread itself - has put me in mind of Spike Lee's film Do The Right Thing.  It doesn't seem like it's just a case of Sarah Palin and her supporters viewing their targets through crosshairs anymore.  It's beginning to look Americans are beginning to view American society, as a whole, through crosshairs.

I hope you don't have a hot summer that side of the pond.
