Best hopes and thoughts for you, him, and his mom.

You: for the strength you will give him, regardless
Him: for the strength he will draw from you, regardless
Mom: for the strength she needs to get through this, regardless, that she may draw it from all our thoughts, hopes and prayers being sent her way.

He was told to stay close that without a transplant it doesn't look good and due to her age she is not a "realtistic" canidate. WTF does that even mean!? Who descides who is a canditate? I mean its hard enough finding donors to begin with, yet alone disqualifying someone for other reasons. *shakes my heads*

He hasn't eaten since yesterday when he told me he didn't have an appetite, I begged him to eat a little something for me. He promised he would. right now I HATE being 2 hours away from him. I want to be there for him, to physically support him and I can't. I told him about this thread and he said to tell everyone thannk you, granted he was a lil irked at 1st b/c he is a very private person but then he realized this is my space, my circle of peers.

You and he, and his mother have been and are in my thoughts and prayers.

It is such a tragic thing that because of the shortage of donors they have very narrow parameters in selecting suitable recipients and it is so heartbreaking for the families. I can not imagine what he is going through. How can any of it seem fair?

Inky, I worked in a couple of transplant hospitals. There aren't enough donor kidneys to go around to all those who need them to survive, so they have to have certain criteria that a recipient needs to meet in order to receive one. There are many factors & one is age, unfortunately for his mother. Also the relative health of the recipient comes into play. If a recipient won't survive the surgery & the subsequent recovery, the donated kidney is wasted. I know that when it's someone in your personal sphere, that sounds harsh. But there has to be a way to choose who is a viable recipient & who is not.

I'm so sorry that you all are going through this & I understand the feeling of wanting to be close to support him right now but I know that the fact that you are supporting him from where you are means a whole lot to him. You are helping him to get through whatever it is that he's needing to get through right now. He knows that you're there for him & that might actually mean more than your physical presence right now.

I'm continuing to pray for all of you & to send positive thoughts out to the Universe. Know that whatever happens, god always has your back. *Hugs*

I felt similar when I worked in a nursing home during a university placement, where a 95 or 98 year old person got hospitalised as she broke her shoulder after having a fall at the toilet at night time. Due to her age they refused to operate her, where I could not believe it when I heared that. The nursing home explained to me then that this would be as it looks worse for their statistics if patients die whilst being in the operation theather than when they aren't...she then died about 2 days later. I felt awful that she was left like that as I am a firm believer that it is always worth to give it at least a try when otherwise she would die anyway....and she was still incredible fit for her age, much fitter than my granny was aged 79...

Perhaps it is the emotional part of me that simply doesn't GET IT. Who are they to say who qualifies to live or die?! Who are the doctors or transplant teams to say simply b/c she is older that she doesn't deserve a chance? That seems to go against so many things for me morally, ethically, and legally. (although I know it doesnt) Perhaps its a good thing I can't be there b/c its easy to hide my disgust for the doctors and the "transplant system" at a distance.

I would ask that along with your prayers and thoughts LOOK at your ID or liscence if your are not donor and can be change that please!

Yes, Inky. As I said when it becomes personal, it does seem harsh. They also have to have a donor kidney that her body might not reject. In other words, one that is a match for her. And believe me, I've worked closely with the transplant teams & they don't enjoy making these kinds of decisions. If it were up to them, everyone who needed a new organ would get one. They are very caring humane people or they wouldn't be working in their chosen field. I have a lot of compassion for them as well as their patients. Imagine having to go home at night knowing that you had to choose between patient A & Patient B as to who would get that one kidney they had available to transplant.

PhoenixPower, the situation that you're talking about is very different. The patient's age meant that she probably would have died from the anesthesia. And they weren't choosing due to resources. They were making a humane decision to not kill her in their attempt to treat her. If she was really in that great shape, she would not have died from breaking her shoulder. It sounds as if you don't know the full story. You listened to rumors spread by someone who was not involved in the decision making process.

I agree that everyone should list themselves as donors. This way, if something happens, the medical professionals will know right away that they need to keep you on life support until your organs can be harvested. Also, your family doesn't have to try to make that decision for you when they are grieving your imminent death. I have been listed as a donor since they started doing organ transplants.

Inky, my prayers for all of you continue. I know that this is so horribly difficult for everyone and I'm beyond words to tell you how sorry I am. At times like these, I have to go to the place I know best. I know that you and I don't share the same faith, but that has never stopped us from caring and appreciating each other's support, so I will share with you, this...

Philippians 4:6-7 (New International Version)
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
