I got my 1099 today in the mail (he was kind to walk in the snow to deliver a book for me). and now I am showing my lack of knowledge off.  I was trained for the preparers years ago, but then tax laws are twisted about so I don't know what is which and who does whom and how in the hell am I to understand everything.

So...if there a tax preparer on the floor, can I beg for some help?  I think that there is more documents coming in.

In the last few years I've used an online service and had great luck. Makes it all very easy.

Now, because of some changes, we have to go back to using an accountant. If you are unsure, I would pay to have a professional do it.

Former IRS agent here (ducks and hides)
The 1099 should also have a letter at the end to determine
what income it is reporting. For example, 1099-Int for interest
or 1099-Div for dividends. If you have worked at all
in the past year, you will still need to collect all of your W2's from
your employers in order to file a complete tax return.
There are some wonderful free tax preparation software online.
The IRS usually provides links to them on their site at www.irs.gov

Feel free to message me on the other side if you have any questions.

What MasterG said.

Also, going through the turbotax free software should prompt you to remember what you need.

The 'income' is on a SSA 1099, so I am not worried about it.  I am considered disabled due to my bipolar disorder (tend to get hypermaniac at times, especially if someone wants to push my buttons).

I have been paying on my student loans, but I don't know what part of the Dept. of Education that deals with the loans.  I know that it deals with the interest of the loans.

I'd love to help, but I'm still not certain what question you are asking.
Disabilty payments are usually not taxable, as long as you aren't
receiving additonal a certain amount of other income.
If for some reason you elected to have taxes taken out of the disabilty income,
you would have to file a return in order to reclaim any that you may have overpaid.

If you are paying on student loans you will be getting something in the mail with regard to the interest of that.  If you own things or pay child support etc it matters.

They have free services usually for many people -- you may want to contact the SS disability office to see if they have free preparers anywhere.  Also check with your local library to see if they will be having any.

Shar, any one of the online tax programs are good...I've used Tax Act, Turbo Tax, and tax cut.  Federal taxes are free to file, and everyone of them will walk you thru the process literally one step at a time.  Go and check them out......I already know what I"m getting back, I just have to find the EIN for the state of Florida, since I have torn apart my place and can't find last year's W2.  I called around last year, and finally got the EIN # from someone in Payroll, and had my return back at the end of January.  Wednesday is the cut off for the IRS......you can usually plan on getting the return back on the 2nd Friday after the Wednesday your return is accepted.

I have a 10-99 for my unemployment, but since I have no idea when I'll actually see that one, and really sort of need the money NOW, I'm cheating a bit by adding it to my income.  I dind't have any taxes withheld from it.....it's a paltry amount anyway, and I needed every penny....so it's the same as if I just list it with the 1099.  It evens out in the end.

Just one word of warning about the tax programs...be very careful about what buttons you hit....last year, I somehow almost ended up paying an extra fee because somehow, I got "updated"......once I called to complain, they removed the charge.....I had also filed a state return, and didn't realize that there'd been an extra amount tagged on it til I looked at my statement.  It was Turbo Tax that did it to me.
