Tis amazing to me that someone can post a tribute to a hero and there have to be those who speak up against him...or those who served with him...or those who've chosen to serve in the military. My father was a WW II vet. He served with Merrill's Marauders in the Burmese Theater. He was with a K-9 portion with a trained white shepard named Butch. My father contracted typhus and dysentery while serving in Burma. Those diseases along with another problem he developed helped to hasten his end at 64 in 1985. I was 30 when he died. He engaged in combat and was shot at and shot at others. Whether he ever killed anyone he never revealed to me or my brother. But he...and the love of country and the duty to "payback" in some way to my fellow citizens and to the country I was lucky enough to be born in... inspired me to join up in 1974 as Vietnam was going on. I joined the 82nd Airborne and did my time proudly, despite being spit on when I came home on leave, despite hearing mutterings about "killer" while walking proudly towards my parents in my dress uniform with the bloused boots, maroon beret, blue infantry cord, red and green AA cord, and silver wings of a paratrooper. One thing he and I shared deeper than anything else...perhaps even deeper than that bond of father-son or doctor-doctor...was the soldier/comrades in arms bond. And neither of us would give up the time we did so for anything. To those of you who are willing to let others protect and defend you and who see no need of doing so...that is what this country allows. But don't take your stance on war to see everyone who does serve in the military as a killer...or a nutcase...or some ignorant jerk who could not work anywhere else. Some of us did it...and do it...because we want to and think we should.

Last month at our munch group's holiday party, I was sitting with a man who had done his tour in Vietnam. We were talking about this very thing. (Pilot, actually, if it interests you, Creative.) How he was treated when he came home and how being called baby killer and being spit on were still bad memories for him today. I'm not much for discussing politics at lifestyle events. (If you can call it that.) In this case, I did make an exception. We spent some time discussing how things have changed. The members of My family don't have experiences like he did. If anything, they are quite the opposite. I can't tell you how many times people have gone out of their way upon seeing one of them in uniform to walk up to us and thank them for their service. It's not just lip service, either. I couldn't list all of the random acts of kindness that people have done. From buying lunch at the airport, to paying for an oil change, to the guy who offered My son his first class seat when he was flying home this past November. Anyway, I could tell just by his expression that he was really glad to hear that things have changed so much. It really mattered to him that active duty folks aren't treated today the way he was back then. I hope God blesses each and every one of those folks who were a part of the stories that I told that man because they didn't just make a difference in our lives. They made a difference in his, too.
