i guess this is fairly self-explanatory!

i'm just looking to expand my tastes a little more, it would be great to hear who your favourite funny man / woman is, and why.

mine's Jack Dee - his cynical, satirical, miserable outlook just ring true with me and i find him incredibly funny.

My Personal Favorite has Been Bill Hicks since I saw Him On an HBO comedy special hosted By rodney Dangerfield

His Biting Sarcastic Sense of Humor, Has Literally made sevral People I Know wet themselves laughing so hard

Sad to say he Passed away sevral years ago, at About 35 years of age from Pancreatic Cancer, and he Only did 4 CD's of Comedy, Look Him Up, think you May enjoy it

There will be many obvious ones, like Jeff Foxworthy and the like.

I want to throw a few out which are not all that popular, but still quite good.

2 from the days of yore (well, 50s or so)

Flanders & Swan - very cutesy, but have a deeper meaning usually, mostly songs, but quite funny.

Tom Lehrer - from the 50s, wrote songs like the Masochism Tango, Send the Marines, and other such controversial (at the time) songs.

Good stuff.

Yours,

benji

I'm a comedy freak.  The best IMO:

EDDIE IZZARD (transvestite Brit.  Should go over well here )  Download Dressed to Kill and Definite Article.
Steve Hofsetter
Of course, George Carlin.  I like the books best, but you know...
Ron White-- I 'm a southerner, but I'm too pretentious to like the other three.  White's dead ban is awesome.
Lewis Black
As already mentioned, Bill Hicks
Robin Williams Live on Broadway actually made me pee my pants I laughed so hard.
Greg Burhndt
Joey Kola
Ardol O'Hanlon
Mitch Hedburg
Pablo Francisco

There's enough there to keep you busy for a month or so.   Almost all of these guys have a video or a Comedy Central Presents thing or something available for download through Limewire.   Most also have material on their websites.

Bill Hicks, indeed.

I'd recommend them all, honestly.  There is no one more bitingly sarcastic, brutally cynical, or just plain honest.

Dangerous
Marble Head Johnson (his band, album sadly out of print)
Relentless
Arizona Bay
Rant in E minor
Love, Laughter and Truth
Flying Saucer Tour vol.1
Shock and Awe
Salvation
The Lost Hours

Collect them all.  Squeegie your third eye.  And laugh til you pee.

Dennis Leary.......Chris Rock.......though not comedians in the stand-up tradition (I don't think), if you're just looking to laugh, get any of the Monty Python films..... and listen to the Bob and Tom show in the mornings if you're able, lots of excellent comedians on there.

There's a good interview with Williams in the new issue of GQ, talks about the night Belushi died among other things.
