Both the NY Times and Politico noted that Obama took the high road, and, predictably, Palin took the low:

In the span of a single news cycle, Republicans got a jarring reminder of two forces that could prevent them from retaking the presidency in next year.

At sunrise in the East on Wednesday, Sarah Palin demonstrated that she has little interest — or capacity — in moving beyond her brand of grievance-based politics. And at sundown in the West, Barack Obama reminded even his critics of his ability to rally disparate Americans around a message of reconciliation.

She has to, as she has nothing else.

Looking back historically will be interesting one day. Despite all the rancor, the most admired man in America today, the polls say, is Barack Obama (yes, even with approval rates down, and even with supporters disappointed on many fronts).

Congress polls very low, and Republicans even below that. The November election was anger at incumbents. Their leadership knows this, and is treading lightly around matters like reform--replace is emphasized rather than repeal (though their replacement proposals are de facto repeal of Medicaid provisions).

Personally, I always liked the bill the House produced better than the mutilated monstrosity that the Senate finally approved.

But as for Palin, here's another News Flash: The sky is still blue.

Palin is not intending to run against Obama. Nor is she intending to run against Huckabee, Romney, etc. Her foes right now are Beck, Limbaugh, etc. because they're all trying to work the same base. I wish that people would quit analyzing her actions as though she's a legit Presidential candidate. She's a talking head only concerned about appealing to her base.

And by talking about the stupidity of the woman, we are making sure she stays just a talking head.

Now, i'm fairly sure that those who know me will understand that i have zero interest in defending Palin.

However.......

To compare the two speeches is a bit off. Yes, they occurred on the same day....yes, that was probably Palin's intent when she scheduled her speech..........yes, i'm sure Palin wished her speech to be compared to Obamas......

But the thing is the two speeches were inevitably designed to be two different things. Palin was speaking to her base and defending herself in the current debate regarding the tone of political discourse. It was a personal statement.

Obama was speaking from a different place. He was standing on statesman groud because that was what was required of him, or any POTUS, at such a time. From what I've read and seen it was a damn good speech.

But Palin didn't have the stage that Obama had yesterday, nor could she. Therefore it is a false comparison.

Palin spoke for herself, because right now thats her role. Obama spoke for the country, because right now thats his job.

I disagree with this woman more than I agree with her but after four straight days of essentially being single handedly blamed for the Arizona shootings (even in this very forum) her speech wasn't any big surprise to me. I see Palin as more of a political activist than any sort of serious national candidate. But let's face it - every time she farts the press is all over it and then acts like she's grandstanding.

Who the fuck are you trying to kid besides yourself?

This woman quit as governor so she could grandstand, and that is all she has done since.
