Ok,,,,,skip summer. Take the spring break days. End of whining....

From what I'm seeing, nobody's whining about them going on MLK day but you.  I still say it's a better resolution than changing the spring break thing.  A lot of families have already planned their vacations around that time off.  Gotten their time arranged off from work.  Established that time off for their child care providers.  Made reservations at hotels, bought plane tickets, etc, etc.

You really believe that it's better to have everyone with plans switch gears just so kids aren't in classrooms for MLK day?

I spent a winter in Macon a couple years ago, and yes, its flat by my standards. Also, "foothills" refers to an area around a mountain range that doesnt have a high enough elevation to be considered a mountain. The Appalachians run through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, which border Ohio to the east, southeast, and south, respectively.

So yes, I win. However, I did not, and shall not, call you all ignorant and/or dumb. I do know a few smart southerners [8D]

WTF!

I grew up in the appalachian foothills of north Georgia and my family is from on top of Sand Mountain (its only about 1000 feet taller than the valley next to it) in Alabama. The Appalchians extend well into both Georgia and Alabama.

Perhaps before making claims like this you should know what you are talking about.

I am in the south Arpig.  The last time we had ice this bad, I was in elementary school, which was mumble mumble a couple of years ago.  Since we need the equipment once every 30 or 40 years, it wouldn't be prudent to spend the money......
Yes, exactly. people in the North just don't understand that we are simply not equipped to deal with conditions like this. I made it down my driveway today, but my car isn't going up until the ice melts. I had to go from near Roswell Rd/Old Canton Rd out to Cartersville this Am and there were still patches of ice on I-75.

LP, driving in snow is not that bad. They had like, what, 4 inches? Slow down about 5 mph, you'll be fine.

...bunch of wimps [8D]

You're talking about folks in Georgia (and other locations) who have never driven in the stuff.  They honestly don't know how.  Even stuff like don't hit the breaks when you're sliding is stuff they really don't know.  I don't want a bus driver who has no experience driving in snow to be on the road with a bus load of kids.

I lived in another city than the OP who created this thread.  I can promise you that the folks in that location can't drive worth a darn to begin with.  Trust Me.  It was better to keep them home.  [:)]

Uh-huh. I grew up between Buffalo and Rochester and I still have a great deal of respect for black ice, which is to say, I don't drive on it.

Here's another clue for you all: we don't have snow tires.

Up here they have snatched away Spring Breaks before when they've gone over the limit of allowed days. The world hasn't ended. I'd much rather see MLK day be honored rather than a simple spring break.

DYB would you feel the same about Veterans Day or Presidents Day?

As for taking spring break away, I am sure that is a possibility, but many folks have vacations planned for that week, that they have planned years in advance.  Taking a Monday will be less disruptive.

I am waiting to see if anyone who chooses to not come to school on Monday will have it as an excused absence.  To me, that would be the right thing to do.

I wouldn't but I am sure there are people here who would care. I don't see the problem with extending a few extra days in the summer or taking spring break. If you take legal holidays you are going to have to pay workers holiday pay which is far more than what you'd pay for spring break/summer days....

What some people are having a difficult time to relating to also is that in places where snow is expected, make up days are already built into the school year.

If there aren't that many snow days then the kids get out earlier than scheduled that year.

Most of you probably read that at least as of 2 days ago, 49 out of 50 states had snow.
The one state that didn't was Florida.

Dealing with snow and ice requires equipment and materials that some areas just don't have.
If San Francisco or Seattle gets snow or ice, you better believe it will shut the city down.

Same thing in "warmer climates" where they don't see this type of weather except rarely.

They don't have snow days built into their year like we do (I live in MA).
I can recall actually going to school on a Saturday to make up a day growing up.

I think our experiences are different on this matter.  I'm basing Mine on missed time from schools due to weather (and other issues) on two different states, GA and CO.  Missed time that My kids had to make up in GA wasn't that difficult.  We went through the ice storm that Hippie mentioned (which was nothing compared to this storm) and it was easily made up by changing a couple of teacher in service days to full school days.  No issue.  My daughter and her family still live there and are working on the plan to make the time up in schools.

When schools lost serious time due to the two blizzards in CO, the district didn't even touch the spring breaks.  They hacked teacher in service days and any singular day off that was on the schedule.  This made it easier for families to plan and work around.

I would rather see holidays axed that make it more convenient.  Most working class folks aren't having that day off anyway, so it isn't as difficult on them to have classes on days that are basically only days off for government employees.  If it were President's Day, would you have the same opposition?

PA originally here.  You're absolutely right about the no snow tires.  Same thing for road clearing crews and equipment.  A storm in GA is a much different affair than one in CO or PA where the county and state actually anticipate these things happening.

We got 12 - 14 year olds eating rat poison without knowing what they were eating, thinking they were candy. Do we really need our kids to have more time off from school?

Myrtle Beach got 13 inches a few days before Christmas some years ago. Three bags of salt in the county.

The difference, i find, between the North and South drivers is... we southerners know we cant drive in that mess. Northerners believe they can. [:D]

LadyPact -> RE: MLK Day as a make-up day for school.... (1/14/2011 11:50:43 AM)

Worth pointing out.  I've lived in places with military bases the entire time that My kids have been school age.  Any time that is true, it makes the driving experience......... interesting, to say the least.  [8D]

Should have taken GA 400 (not that it would have gotten you to Cartersville but it is impossible to get going fast enough on that road for ice to be a problem).

kalikshama -> RE: MLK Day as a make-up day for school.... (1/14/2011 12:19:16 PM)

When I went to school in Massachusetts, we added snow days to the end of the school year. I think this is a better solution. Less last minute juggling and opportunity for discord, whether justified or not.

Bingo. During the Blizzard of '77 we missed thirteen days of school so they tacked on an extra two weeks to the school year. We kids howled in protest (it was, we were quite certain, the greatest injustice in the history of the world), but to no avail.

~FR~ Or one could just learn to deal with ice and snow and not close the schools...just a suggestion, though I know you Americans hate to learn from Canadian experience

I hate to break this to you but but ice and snow don't stop at the border. Many of us Americans have plenty of experience of our own with winter. Its the Southerners who have no experience (and we Northerners consider it our God given right to laugh at them every time they go into a panic over half an inch of snow [:D])
