Just as I suspected, at some point the GOP would feel like they didn't need Michael Steele's skin-- Um, I mean brand of leadership anymore when they felt like they had Obama on the ropes.

The GOP had Michael Steele for the same reason that gay men have girlfriends. Not all republicans are racist, of course not, but whether the GOP was racist or not, they weren't above using race for leverage in the fight.  Also I think they feared that when the democrats got a black man elected that republicans would seem racist by comparison.

The strange thing is, I wonder what made him think he got the job for any other reason?  They've chosen based on demographics before.

No one else in the party was suited to be the VP than Sarah Palin? Really? the Right CAN'T Believe that.  Not if they're smart enough to actualize such a brilliant propaganda strategy.

We'll see how the knew RNC chairman does.

He let himself be used, so I can't feel much sympathy.

I think the RNC ran McCain and Palin to effectively shoot themselves in the foot on purpose. I think they knew what was happening to the economy (because they were probably in on it) and figured let it crash and burn around a democrat. This would make them look good and be poised for the 2012 election.

Using race is not past either party, and neither is racism. I've heard stories about Clinton down in Arkansas...... and it didn't even have to do with all those dead bodies or "suicide". The fact is they're all scum.

Just throwing it out there. Does it fit for you ? Throwing an election ? If that is so, and I think it likely, they are pandering to the lowest common denominator. That is a key to sales, and of all people, who sells themselves more than politicians. (evangelists maybe ? )

Just a thought.

The GOP saw Obama as a rock star and put forth two rock stars of their own, Sarah Palin and Michael Steele.  While Obama transitioned from rock star to leader, neither Palin or Steele has done so.  Palin has become her own brand, and works for her own good, not that of the GOP.  Steele has drained the RNC of its funds while using his own expense account liberally.

I predeicted Steele to be gone some time ago in here. I dont give a crap what color he or anyone else is. He just suffered from "foot in mouth disease" too much.

Good riddance. This dude was not working out.

I'd say this demonstrates that the Republicans are less racist than Democrats. We might hire you because you're black, but we'll fire your ass for incompetence without any regard to it.

Hundreds of major donors have abandoned the Republican National Committee, leaving it $20 million in debt and threatening its future as a central player in the 2012 presidential election.

On Friday, when RNC members gather at National Harbor to select a chairman, they will meet under the shadow of the committee's finances, which are in worse shape than at any time since the Federal Election Commission began keeping records 35 years ago.

"You can't even dream of winning in 2012 with that kind of operation," said John Dowd, a Washington lawyer and longtime RNC donor who decided against contributing in the past two years because of the "mess" at the party. "As long as it's in that kind of shape, I can't even think of giving."

Seems like the GOP has a long road ahead of them.

Thank goodness, because he was not ready for the job, which made the strategy all the more transparent, and awful.     Steele has gotten good mileage though, in that he is now famous, and advertising a book of his.   Mutual use is okay in my book, as long as all parties are willing, and informed participants.     M

Steven, the GOP saw Obama as a rock star? Boy they are dumb!
That's like paying for tickets to the Rolling Stones and getting Lawrence Welk instead.

So the GOP is complaining about the handling of the economy after they mismanaged the Clinton economy AND the RNC finances?  Wow.  That's chutzpah.

popeye, you're missing the point.  During the campaign, Obama had a riveting personal story, charisma, and a strong campaign which was partly driven by personality.  As I say, a rock star.

He's had a rough transition from that to an actual officeholder.  One of the drawbacks about rock stars is that they foster a cult of personality, which does not translate well into competence at governing.

In Palin's case, she's ALL about the cult of personality.  She doesn't like to govern, and doesn't intend to.

Steele's problem was that he thinks about himself and his aims, and the RNC head should ideally be someone with a singleminded goal of pushing the GOP agenda.  It's amazing that anyone even knows who Steele IS - with the exception of Howard Dean, I cannot tell you who any head of any RNC or DNC was.  It's supposed to be a faceless apparatchik position.
