TheHeretic -> Repent! The END is Near! (1/15/2011 10:10:12 PM)

http://www.ebiblefellowship.com/may21/

So, according the link, and the preacher fellow, the Rapture will be taking place on May 21, 2011, with planetary destruction to follow 5 months later.

What is it that makes some people want to believe that there won't be a tomorrow?

Dunno. Sounds fishy to me. If he is following the bible with his line of thinking, isnt there supposed to be three years or so of tribulation?

Usually, that would be today. [:D]

I'll have to find my sack cloth and ox cart; "BRING OUT YOUR DEAD! BRING OUT YOUR DEAD!"

My sisters and I were wondering about this, just the other day, because our dad was faily religious, read the bible, and had statements like this.
We have vastly diverted away from those beginnings, but we don't dismiss those statements off the cuff.    M

I have a hard time believing anything put out by Harold Camping. He already predicted the end of the world would come in September 1994.

Here's how he came to his recent conclusion... Run the numbers

Why do people believe this stuff? Good question. I have a family member who is adamant about the fact that "everything is in god's hands" and because of that, there's no need to plan ahead....as long as you're "born again". In a recent conversation, this person said to me "Why do you worry about the future? The end is near anyway. Just accept Jesus and you won't need to worry about worldly things."

This kind of talk, in my opinion, is an attempt to escape reality. There are so many people looking for something better...and so many charlatans willing to offer predictions and promises of being taken away from earthly burdens.

hehe

Well said, Kirata...there's been many a day I didn't want to face "tomorrow".

But, Heretic, maybe for some it could be the 'what if' fascination of it all?  I can't tell you how much I learned about the Mayans, astrology, astronomy, poles shifting, devastation and 12/21/2012 (or was it the 22nd?).  Not because I truly believed the world was going to end on that day, but just because of the interest of it all.  Inquiring minds and all that, ya know?  Some like to live by conspiracy theories...others like to believe they're doomed...some are just fascinated with the why's of it all (the why's of why people believe it, that is)...and others just like to educate themselves with trivia.  And then again...some are just always up for a good story, too!

Gosh.  I posted this a week ago on the silver board.

The replies were pretty negative.   IE-  it is not going to happen.

Just as long as it doesn't happen before Super Bowl Sunday I don't care.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Repent! The END is Near! (1/16/2011 9:14:48 AM)

ya know, the caliber of people that say they have a direct line to gods plan is so poor, that if they are right, i really don't want to go to heaven with them. I would prefer to be with the other heathens. Would be more fun, i think.

Hehehehehe. Good answer.

I don't see depression in these folks though. Some are just plain mean people, who can't wait to see "the wicked" punished, I think, but a lot of the "end of days" believers I have encountered (nobody from this particular batch, or I'd be trying to get some bargains on their earthly possessions) are far more passive about it.

I had a liberal basting in the apocalyptic worldview along the way. There are some fun ideas to play with, and I'm not one to automatically dismiss the very concept of prophetic visions. Marching off to the hilltops at the appointed hour? It's just another mass psychosis, I suppose, but one I find very odd.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that a billion Hindus who "haven't accepted Jesus as their saviour" will be in a tizzy!

anthrosub -> RE: Repent! The END is Near! (1/16/2011 12:17:49 PM)

There's a guy at Union Station in DC with one of those signs. His is quite impressive. He has this sort of backpack contraption strapped to his back with two poles extending about 9 feet above the ground with the sign on top. I've been pondering whether to ask him what happened on the 22nd but he probably won't be there. On June 6, 2006 there was a woman going from car to car on the metrorail telling everyone to repent because the devil was coming. And a few years before that there was a guy on the train telling everyone he had one of those crazy straws with a floating eyeball from Burger King implanted inside him by CIA aliens. The eyeball was really some sort of mind control device. Also, did you know that Coca-Cola spelled backwards is "Aloc-Acoc", the Indian god of refreshment?

I've been waiting for the rapture.

With those bozos out of the way, we can proceed sanely.

Anthro, oh jeese, those wackos always think "The CIA" wants to brainwash them! The CIA couldn't care less about brainwashing when it's soooo much easier to put a bullet in them.
