Having grown up Catholic I expect bizarre things from the Church, but this is really, really weird.

John Paul II's blood to be relic in Polish church

WARSAW, Poland – A vial containing blood drawn from Pope John Paul II shortly before he died will be installed as a relic in a Polish church soon after his beatification later this year, an official said Monday.

Piotr Sionko, the spokesman for the John Paul II Center, said the vial will be encased in crystal and built into the altar of a church in the southern city of Krakow that is opening in May.

The exact date of the opening is not yet known, but it should be shortly after John Paul's beatification at the Vatican on May 1.

Sionko said the idea came from Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, the archbishop of Krakow and the longtime friend and secretary of the late Polish-born pontiff. The blood was drawn for medical tests at Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic shortly before John Paul's death on April 2, 2005, and is now in Dziwisz's possession, he said.

"It was the cardinal's proposal," Sionko said. "He is of the opinion that this is the most precious relic of John Paul II and should be the focal point of the church."

the catholic church has kept relics since from the beginning....

the head of St. Thomas Aquinas
the right forearm of King St. Stephen of Hungary
St. Bernadette's body encased in glass
St. Elizabeth's skull
St. Anthony of Padua's tongue

This isn't anything new or unusual for them. The body parts of the saints are seen as miraculous in some way or another either for their healing properties or the fact that they've never decayed after death..what they call incorruptibles.

There are hundreds of these all around the world in catholic churches.

And you don't find all that the least bit strange?

Odd, but far less so than the practices of the church with regard to sexual predators among the priests.

Something is wrong in the Catholic church.

Not particularly, no.

I find far, far stranger the protestant sects that practice snake handling or that believe they will soon be raptured.

Music, those aren't protestant sects they're stand alone churches.

If you are not catholic but christian, you are pretty much by definition protestant....

after all, what do you think they were protesting?

littlewonder -> RE: John Paul II's blood to be relic in Polish church (1/17/2011 10:24:04 AM)

no I don't find it strange.

Almost every religion around the world has something similar to this.

Even some buddhist sects have relics they believe to be the skull and tears of buddha.

Most religions want a piece of something from their gurus/spiritual guides/saints/etc...that they can revere, worship.

It's no stranger than their simulated ritualistic cannibalism.

Aren't you overlooking the almost equally old and freaky Greek orthodox church there?

Wait, let's go back and look at your other post.

Then let me ask the question again.

This isn't strange?

If I said, 'The exception that proves the rule'.  Could you see your way clear to overlook this social and political faux paux, and shut yer bloody gub about it, old bean?

and for anyone who thinks we fight, *NB:   [8D][:D]

You make it sound like the Catholics are the only ones who do this.

Dont the Egyptians have relics? Mummies and such are certainly bodies.

The Jews have relics. Perhaps not body parts, but that is what they call them.

The Native Americans certainly do. And they had to petition ebay to stop the selling of native american bones.

Or is your objection that they do so now? Im not sure, but im willing to bet many of these men had little to no family left. They spent their lives working for the church.

Im really not sure what you find so "odd".

I find it all pretty odd.

But this is the 21st century and people are still doing these types of things?

I mean really, a vial of his blood taken at a hospital while he was ill is sacred?

I guess we can give thanks that it wasn't a urine sample.

That'll be because it is pretty odd.

The Catholic church is rooted in the past, so it shouldn't be a shock to anyone.

There's a lovely sequence in Tom Baker's memoirs about how his entire (Catholic) school were paraded in front of a relic every Wednesday morning - a finger bone from one of the saints, if memory serves.

In the middle ages they (the church) used to flog off bits of dead saint to rich people too ... sort of like breaking saints for spares :)

No, the British museum (and similar but lesser establishments elsewhere) has most of them, now.
