I'm wondering if anyone here has seen this 10 part BBC program that first aired in the mid-eighties and would like to hear your impressions and discuss. If you haven't, I highly recommend it...it is timeless.

Hmmm...all I can say at this point is I'm a bit surprised.

It is a genuine work of art, all the more since it seems effortless.  I wish I were one tenth the teacher that James Burke was.

For those who can't get the DVDs (although Netflix has them) there is also a coffee-table book.

Hey there John, how are you? We exchanged a couple years back a few times. I looked and looked for a copy up till a couple years ago and the only place you could get it was some college supply company for $500. Then I found a "copy" made for classroom discussion on eBay for $50, bought it and naturally stopped looking. Last weekend while looking up James Burke titles I found it's now available on Amazon for $90 (down from $150 in January '09) so a ordered it. Never read the book and according to some of the reviews of people who read the book first then saw the program, the program is better. I think the book was an afterthought.

I love the premise of the series and the wholistic approach James Burke takes. He's quite a character. As one reviewer said, "James Burke can make watching paint dry exciting."

Incidently, if you haven't read "The Axemaker's Gift" I recommend it, too.

I'll put in a request for "The Axemaker's Gift" at Paperback Book Swap.  Incidentally, that's where I got my copy of "Universe."

The book was probably considered to be a supplement.  Obviously, there was a lot of labor of love spent on the series

I loved that program. For anyone who enjoyed it half as much as i did, I highly recommend "Connections," a similar series Burke did in the late 70s. At the time, I thought that it was one of the best things ever done on television, and even 30 years later I'd be hard-pressed to think of many programs that were better.

In each episode, Burke presented a seemingly relatively minor historical event from ancient times, or an obscure invention or scientific discovery, and followed it forward through the centuries to show how it set in motion a cascade of events and technological developments that led directly to some aspect of modern society that is fundamental to the way we live today. Every minute of every episode was nothing short of spellbinding.

I believe the book is available on Amazon, but unfortunately I don't think it's out on DVD at this time. Pity.

I received my new copy of "The Day the Universe Changed." Judging from the excellent clarity of both audio and video, I would say it came from an original master or something very close to it.

I just finished watching "In the Light of the Above" and even though I've seen it at least 6 times, the part about how the Crusades led to the creation of modern universities and began a revolutionary fresh look at the natural world still amazes me.

Curious if you received your copy and watched it yet? I received my new copy and am half way through it (savoring each episode as I go). I've seen this program maybe 6 times over the past 25 years and each time it just blows me away.
