Scientists plan to clone Wooly Mammoth.

Why?  The earth has evolved, the climates are vastly different, this is a creature that is used to ice, snow and a whole lotta space and food.   "Creating" one who will be kept in a pen, in weather much warmer then they are bred for and in solitude, seems cruel.   Is this just a "because we can" thing?

They have nothing better to do apparently.

The odds against success are astronomical.

Also Wooliy Mammoths went extinct very recently, less than 4000 years ago for one population. They probably were hunted to extinction and could presumably survive quite well in parts of Russia and Canada.

With all of this global warming going on, I don't think he would like it here right now.

PyrotheClown -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/17/2011 6:21:32 PM)

Well, some would say that we were to ones to kill them off...so maybe it's only right we bring'em back

Lets clone some Do-Dos while we're at it

Why am i getting a bad vibe of Jurassic Park in my head?

mummyman321 -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/17/2011 7:55:43 PM)

What I really want to know how do I get a job cloning a Mammy Woolith? Who is paying this person?????

Never bring up something you cannot put down - H. P. Lovecraft

I had the same thought Angel, and the line from the original movie, " you spent so much time figuring out how, you never asked yourself if you should ".

Maybe the notion of bringing back someone long gone isn't too far fetched.  We'll see how they do.  Ok, now I'm having flashbacks to Pet Semetary.

Termyn8or -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/18/2011 3:38:33 AM)

Just don't let Steven King get word of this, it's worth at least a trliogy with his crew.

Well its about fucking time! Ever since I was a little bloke watching the Flintstones, I've been wanting to try some mammoth steak!

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/18/2011 7:01:32 AM)

it seems like a "because we can" thing -- if it's even successful. i remember hearing about this when they found the extremely well preserved remains of a baby mammoth. it just seems silly when there are so many other issues to be occupied with...

Termyn8or -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/18/2011 7:33:49 AM)

Maybe then things are good eatin'

Oh, not much of a joke I guess in light of genetically engineered food. I'll have the Wooly sirloin and a baked Frankenpotato.

If you look at it from a different angle, not just the mammoth but what can be done, then go from there and think how much it can actually further science, what else can be done with that knowledge, etc. I would think that the mammoth issue will raise a lot more money than something that sounds "less exciting"....

GreedyTop -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/18/2011 7:59:12 AM)

all I could think at first was" if they DO succeed.. what about the poor mammoth?  it'd be the only one alive.. wont it get lonely?"

I guess if they keep it with elephants, the mammoth wouldn't even know it's not one... Though the Japanese doing it makes me a bit uneasy because they're not exactly known for their compassion for animals (dolphins, whales, etc.)

ShaharThorne -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/18/2011 10:47:42 AM)

If someone gets me a small lamp, I will read Lovecraft by myself (in bed)...

I might need someone to tell me its okay when I start having nightmares...

DomKen -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/18/2011 11:14:29 AM)

I am not at all in favor of what they are attempting but it does have implications for saving endangered species. If we can produce clones of nearly extinct species from museum pieces then we could restore lost genetic diversity which could be the deciding factor in saving the species.

GreedyTop -> RE: Let sleeping mammoths lie.... (1/18/2011 11:23:30 AM)

agreed, Ken..
