I suppose it's all perception. I'm from earthquake country, disaster happens with no warning. People are running around as if the end of the earth is upon us, because the river is rising. It's a slow, gradual thing, you have plenty of notice to move stuff. In our case, they predicted the flood on Monday, and it's now Wed and starting to really happen.

Some people just love a good disaster I guess, gives em something to talk about at family gatherings. We were out this morning taking pictures, sitting on a rock in the sun and watching the hysteria from folks who simply needed to move their belongings across the street, lol

Maybe it's me..but if we have a warning with days to prepare, unlike an earthquake or tornado...I call that pretty darn convenient.

Kinda like lava flow. The volcano was flowing lava an everyone was in a panic... of course I had to go look at this shit. I'm watching the panic filled denizens of Hawaii running around like mad rabbits, but then I saw something that calmed me right down... a saw a snail speed by the lava flow like it was sitting still. Funny how such critters can change your perception on things.

I agree that people tend to become hysterical over the silliest things these days, but sitting in the sun and taking pictures, and assuming a slow, gradual thing, will remain a slow, gradual thing can be equally silly.

I have not of yet achieved my quota for debauchery in this life time. So I trust the universe is going to take good care of me till the last maiden of my quota is thoroughly violated. I am so glad the universe doesn't prescribe to the whole roll over minutes... well, roll over quota.

It's REAL simple, folks, if you have a little advance warning, then either evade or prepare, or if not,, bend over and kiss your ass, or favorite piece thereof, good-bye. If you survive, repair and re-build. If you don't, then you become part the planet as a whole. Either way, problem solved.

Actually twistedwillow, we were in absolutely no danger, and if the folks that lost their minds had bothered to notice, on our side of the street, is where the police and fire crews were advising people to stash livestock and cars.

This wasn't a tsunami, it was a few inches of slow moving water, that wasn't about to flare up and engulf our little city. Our neighbors and I were watching in amazement at the people who were furious the police wouldn't help them move those rusting, non working cars. Um, they are covered in rust, even if the water did reach above the rims (there hasn't been tires on these cars in a few years), it really couldn't hurt anything, most don't have engines!

This is what happened at a nice little river in Australia, in a matter of minutes (just gotta get through the 30 second commercial before the news video). I don't recommend hanging out casually watching. I remember a few years ago a crowd of people stood around watching the tide rise, despite being warned to leave because it was reaching dangerous levels. Then a big wave came and washed a few away. I'd rather be careful in such cases.

I saw the article but not a video on your post - I probably missed that. Oops to the duplication. But yes, definitely the same storm.

In any case, fear is very real for some people so I'm not into ridiculing others for theirs. I live in California, where there's no warning for earthquakes. If we had such warnings about potential disasters, I'd pay attention to them.

As usual, the doomsday reports failed miserably. The river peaked over a foot lower then predicted, water is already receding from low lying pastures.

I discovered that flooding is not new to this area, and this was a mild case. 2006 saw much more destruction and higher water levels, where we live was considered river front property during that flood. Being raised in CA, has taught me to watch for certain things when buying real estate...stay away from hillsides and homes built in natural creek beds. So, we are on a prime location here, high and dry :)

There's usually a reason why some property is lower in price then others. :)
