So in other words, you would prefer to not acknowledge the problems.

Which makes it easy to find a solution, since there is no problem to begin with.

Fuck you, but you are an incredible moron.

Not at all what I said, now or in earlier posts.

A solution to which problem?

Jobs were being outsourced when the unemployment rate was low. Nor is that why we have high unemployment--we have dramatically increased productivity. That's why GDP is still growing.

What "flood of imported products"? Do you mean more than usual? Really? Who's buying all these goods, the unemployed?

Point is, knee jerk sound bites don't solve problems, no matter how enticing they might sound.

Or do you mean the trade deficit? One solution is to grow our exports--and we are. In 2008, we exported $1.2 billion, and in 2010, $1.8 billion. President Obama has also made exports a priority--I think his goals are fantasy, but the programs to promote our products are still a good idea.

Working with China regarding its currency policies is another solution, and a situation that is slowly improving. So is cracking down on intellectual property theft.

Further, China's situation isn't etched in stone. As their middle class grows, and as their economy expands, there will be slower growth (basic economics--costs will rise).

quote:

[and no, I'm not denying there's a trade deficit, folks--clearly there IS]

and yes, it's a problem. Just not a catastrophe, and not for the reasons you want to believe.

It's funny, most people think China has the hammer over us because of all the money we owe them. But, if we can't pay them back I'd say that (we) have the hammer over (them.) Debt can be used as a "weapon" it seems.

More than that. China needs us in a number of ways--more high tech, for instance. And we're a large market.

It is ye olde symbiotic relationship in action. China is far more dependent on us then we are on them, which is why they are trying to expand their markets. Their sheer size, predatory pricing practices, and their willingess to let hundreds of millions of their citizens wallow in poverty make them a much more real threat than Japan ever was. Japan chose to invest in real estate, China in bonds, not a terribly important distinction.

Willbeur, why do you think republican leaders voted against the bill designed to discourage outsourcing? Their campaign before the last election was all about jobs. I think if democrats had reminded everyone of this in their campaigns and more had mentioned it on their tv ads, democrats would've retained majority in the House.

I think its been said in this thread a number of times, but if it was a different one, I'll repeat it slowly.

Protectionism....
Doesnt....
Save.....
Jobs.

The GOP is doing exactly what it said it would in the 2010 campaign. Straying from that is the only way they dont gain further ground in 2012.

And here I was trying to have a nice, polite conversation.

Forgetting what a dickhead you are when anyone dares to challenge your beliefs.

I think you should go back to drinking.

My bet is you were much more pleasant then.

That's not a mature way to disagree with someone. Come on, you're better than that. We're all adults here and capable of having a discussion without personal attacks.

There are exceptions to every rule, and this Rule is one of them. He deserves every personal attack he gets, which is why he's on my blocked list.

Yes I thought you did Willbeur, but just for clarification I would like to say I have never blocked anyone because I always thought it cowardly.

And can someone quote me on this so Willbeur sees it?

I don't block people who personally attack me. If someone does that I want to know about it so I can defend myself.

Exactly.

But at the risk of pushing this too far, some people just don't have the stomach for that.

In the beginning, yes. It took time to bring down the strong economy we once had.

China's situation isn't etched in stone. As their middle class grows, and as their economy expands, there will be slower growth (basic economics--costs will rise).

Agreed. In fact, I've read articles stating this is already happening. Greedy companies are responding by finding other third world countries to outsource to. They will continue moving from country to country until they run out of third world countries to outsource to. So costs rising in China isn't going to fix this. Meanwhile, the cost of food, gas, rent, and electricity in the US continues to rise. What shape do you think the US will be in by the time these greedy companies run out of countries to outsource to?

I thought I was.

I'm not sure what you took as offensive but some things don't translate well on a message board.
