It is a deterrant to crime. You are on camera every day almost from the time you leave your home every morning.

You are comfortable with that?

No, not particularly.

I don't know how she can sue that no one helped her when in this video she exclaims that she 'hoped nobody saw her'.

Do we need to childproof for adults now?  The elderly nor the blind  aren't that spun and parents know to keep their kids OFF of these ledges (we'd hope).

Since DHS now has a new mall/subway/stadium agenda, we should hope stupid human tricks like this are not a means to remove the freedom to use personal video recording devices (such as cellphones).  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRMcdgMhz2w&feature=player_embedded#at=521

Some things are just funny (as this woman's self-misfortune is) and some just aren't. What next?  No more Funniest Home Movies? lol

I find your behavior very suspicious and I've notified Homeland Security.

Seriously though, I found that clip very disturbing.

When Bush first proposed this it reminded of the Fatherland.

And Napolitano is making it worse.

The funniest part about that video is that it is true.

Sometimes I go to Wal-Mart just for the entertainment.

Superb! Thanks for that :)

That peopleofwallmart site is quality - first tripped across it a few years back and some of it is pure horror show :)

ETA: I've decided to add "purpletrator" to my vocabulary, and use it in everyday conversation as much as possible :)

Okay.

1. The mall has a right to tape because it's for a business reason.  If one of the stores was shoplifted from, this footage would be reviewed.
2. The tapes are the property of the mall.  So the employees that released it are technically misusing their employer's property.
3. The woman in the video has a flimsy case.  If the video stated her name, she'd have a better one.  But nobody would have identified her without her self-identification.
4. The humiliation she suffered is minor.  And the fact that her actions resulted in the video becoming ten times more popular than it would have otherwise will weaken the case further.

It's wrong that staff leaked the video tape but it's impossible to tell the identity of the person who fell into the fountain.
Looks to me like she's trying to make a big buck out of nothing. If she'd not come forward to the media, no one
would be any the wiser as to her identity.

I hope the staff at the mall get a slap on the wrist or fired for leaking the video. Hopefully a judge will throw her case
out of court as the tape did nothing to identify her.

Pretty much, releasing the video footage is not cool, but yeah, if she wouldn't have decided to sue and go on TV, the whole world would not have been aware of her stupidity.

I get the invasion of privacy, but nobody could identify her on youtube, so she wasn't that invaded, seems the biggest invasion of her privacy was her going on TV to complain about it and identify herself... DUH....

What's next? She's going to sue mobile phone manufacturers because her cell didn't come with a disclaimer saying "Don't walk and text at the same time..."

Of course, if not for THIS (and other similar incidents)

Of course she wants to sue. Look at all the charges she is facing.

** Update from MSNBC**

In the hours that followed Cathy Cruz Marrero's appearance on 'Good Morning America' today to talk
about the fall and its aftermath, she was in court for a status hearing on charges of five felony counts,
including theft by deception and receiving stolen property," reports ABC News.

Turns out Marrero's been out on $7,500 bail since 2009, after being charged with running up more
than $5,000 in purchases on a co-worker's credit card. No wonder she had a lawyer handy.

Marrero's next court date is April 21, and she's facing about six months of house arrest and electronic
monitoring, according to the Reading Eagle. So all y'all talking about how if she just shut up and went on
with her life, nobody would know it was her in the fountain —maybe six people recognized her — are more
right than you realized. While it's unknown how many people knew about her theft charges, we all sure know
about it now.

the cameras that caught her unidentifiable self falling into the fountain wouldnt be as necessary.

She was offered a hug,

what more does she want?  A full time lifeguard to be on duty at a public fountain?  If it were a wet floor and the yellow signs were up, that would have been plenty enough to deter a lawsuit.  Seeing a hip-high wall usually stops people from walking into it--not to mention the WATER!

*PLEASE do not tell us that David Hasselhoff will now be in random Malls teaching fountain safety    aaaaaaaAAaa

also she says she was texting back a lady from her church.  Maybe they made her appointment for her baptismal, and God just did it a lil early. :)

I think the first question is why anyone should be under surveillance while in a mall.

Personally I am not too keen on it, but I do understand that the shops in a mall suffer from shop lifters, that people in malls also have their pockets picked, and you want to identify the criminals or if security personnel sees a pick pocket they can track and stop him... So it does make sense...

On the other hand most of the time the monitors are not manned, I recall a couple of years ago I had my pocket picked with the old trick of somebody behind me with a pram, I didn't see it, took a step backwards, was terribly worried I hurt the child, made sure the baby in the stroller was OK, while somebody liberated my purse. Now the shop didn't find anything on their tape, when I reported it to the police they told me that a gang is operating in the area... So I canceled all the cards but this is how I found out that some cards actually have the pin in the magnetic strip (hoobloodyray, makes so much sense to have a pin if the criminals have pin readers), but I got a list of the "hole in the walls" where they tried it from Amex, Visa and Master Card, of course I gave that list to the police and suggested they might check the CCTV footage of the banks. Apparently the cop I spoke to wasn't one of the more clever ones, he asked me why I would like a picture of the pickpockets... I was bit gobsmacked and said "Errr, your colleague said there is a gang operating in the area, I thought YOU might be interested in having CCTV footage of the criminals, you know so you can possible catch them?" Answer "Oh alright, I see what you mean..." It made me wonder a bit about the the IQ that is needed to be a cop....
