The good news is, I saved the phone when I spilled a fresh cup of coffee on my desk this morning. I like my coffee with lots of cream and sugar, so it was a sticky mess. The optical mouse wasn't so lucky and got drenched. The wheel barely turns, and the left button sticks badly.

Do I just need to get a new one, or does anyone know some nifty trick I can use to clean it?

i'd just get a new one and save the trouble of tryna clean it out.

You may need to replace the mouse balls. Here is an apt memo.

To: Whom this may concern

Re: Replacement of mouse balls

If a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement.

Mouse balls are now available as FRU (Field Replacement Units). Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel.

Before proceding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending on the manufacturer of the mouse. Foreign balls can be replaced by the pop off method.

Domestic balls are replaced by using the twist off method. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge.

Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately. It is recommended that each person have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction.

Any customer missing his balls should contact the local personnel in charge of removing and replacing the necessary items.

Please keep in mind that a customer without properly working balls is an unhappy customer.

Thanks, Pam. It's no use at all to the device, but it has improved my outlook on the thing.

 Clean as thoroughly as possible with isopropyl alcohol (NOT rubbing alcohol) at least 90% pure. Let it dry for at least an hour and you should be good to go.

Cream and sugar are the culprits. Black coffee wouldn't do nearly as much damage.

Be thankful it was only a mouse. I did that to a keyboard ... total wipe out, requiring replacement.

I once binned a work laptop into a bucket of soapy, detergent-filled water, while cleaning my kitchen floor and hosting a conf call at the same time.

In retrospect, not my brightest move :)

Ouch! Thankfully my keyboard replacement was cheap.

Thankfully, my employer of that time thought my honesty was laudable (although, to be fair, my comments when "chairing" said meeting were pretty damming*) in not trying to cover up the incident. My God-Boss Director at that time was a lovely American gay guy, camp as fuck, and his words, on hearing how the lead got tangled in the mop, and then dragged the whole caboodle off the kitchen table and into the bucket, were:

<pregnant pause>

<very camp voice>

Oh come on, who hasn't done that? Steve, get this man a new laptop! You have such integrity!

Bless him :)

*"Phil, thanks for that update. Ok, turning to the EC** Office, can I first say guys that you've made really great headway in OH FUCK ME NO!! OH CHRIST ON A COCK!! ARSE!! SHITTING ADA!! SATAN'S TITS NO!!" <at this point I realised I was "live" and dropped the conf call like a brick>

ROFL!

We shall see. I cannibalized a wired mouse off another 'puter, and tried rinsing the scroll wheel and buttons on my wireless with alcohol. It's headed for the trash anyway, so nothing to lose. It certainly wasn't designed to be taken apart.

I'm a fan of the thorough soak in 0 PPM water, then allow to dry for a few days. No idea if that'd work for a mouse, but it's saved the odd keyboard or 2 over the years.

Mind you, they're like virgins - never quite the same again :)

He probably means the scroll wheel. They've been around for, what? 15 years now?

I sometimes wonder if your computer is made of wood, and runs on coal ;)

my same problem [:D]
there is a spry that cleans the elecrtonics
i did forget its name but it can be found in alocal hard store.
blug your mouse out of your system to bee safe
then you need to open your mouse if you like it as i do like mein
with a screw driver & open the upper top away
you will find a layer of elecronics & the (ball) in the middle - i my case it was a laser beam in the middle.
take that layer in your hand & spry it with the spry fairlly
let it to dry out
then you can bug it back on & walla good as new
