Lets say your'e on a trip and have to recharge your car. Just how long will it take to do so ? Maybe 2 to 4 hours ?.

30 minutes.

Isn't a 30 minute charge only good for about 10 miles, though?

That is what I gathered from the article in USA Today about the retail stores adding the outlets.  http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2011-01-14-electric-car-charging-stations_N.htm

But I could be wrong.  I have never really looked into electric car charging times.

Beyond their control? Or were they bought out?

I think that he is talking about the Stirling engine from the 1800's.

When Aylee was a kid- gas was .12 cents a gallon!   They cleaned your windows- put air in your tires and checked under the hood. and gave you a free glass when you filled up.

!!!

I think the fact that the steamers were a lot fussier (it could take anything up to an hour to build up a head of steam sufficient to get one moving) than an ic engine was the main thing that killed them off. They just couldn't compete with something that had a smaller engine that needed less fiddling.

I was thinking more of Victorian road steamers (there were several) than the things NASA and GM experimented with last century. I'm not sure if any of those used stirling engines rather than conventional steam ones. None of them were a great success, though: I do know that much.

Tesla.   Would he approve of todays electric bills?

I doubt it.

You drive for less than two hours and have to stop for an hour to recharge. Sounds like a great way to get someplace to me. You better have a lot of time on your hands.

A trip to the grocery store takes an hour. To the mall, basically the same. To the Dr... longer than an hour.

Its feasible.

People seemed to have liked the EV1.

LiFe batteries can be charged in less than 5 min.

Pending that infrastructure, very few people drive more than 50 miles a day. You can rent a gasser for long trips.

Where did you get that figure from?

Nissan says it takes about 7 hours to fully charge the Leaf.  That's that home on the 220 volt system.  They mention a 480 volt fast charge system that may be available in the future, "when a standard is selected".

There is a system in Japan but it's not even really being deployed wide spread until March this year .  Don't look for anything like that here soon.

That charging system runs about $60,000 up to $120,000 to install.  They say an 80% charge in 30 minutes.

With current technology the only viable approach is swappable batteries that can be charged far more efficiently and in off-peak hours.

Jeffff -> RE: Will $5 a gallon gas soon be the reality? (1/24/2011 12:13:00 PM)

The Volt has a gasoline engine that charges the battery as you drive.

Yeah, and until they invent a perpetual motion device, that accomplishes nothing that is any better than just driving on gas.

thats just fucking stooooooooooooooooooopid wilbur, you should look that up.

Volt, 237 mpg city
Leaf, 367 mpg city

pahunkboy -> RE: Will $5 a gallon gas soon be the reality? (1/24/2011 12:19:55 PM)

Not only that- but Jefff said you would get out and push.

I have paid $5 a gallon before   was in the late 70's.   So to see it would not be a shock.

What alternate universe was that?

Gas didn't average a dollar a gallon till 1980.  I might have been only been in high school but I know gas was in seventy to eighty cent range.

mnottertail -> RE: Will $5 a gallon gas soon be the reality? (1/24/2011 12:39:47 PM)

It was most likely in Germany.
