A Democrat (of course) state legislator in Illinois is proposing a law against texting or talking on a cell phone while walking. He explained that government exists to protect us from ourselves. Really?
I am amazed at how many people think this is a good idea. We are fast becoming Europe. Nanny knows best, right?

Why, does Europe have such a law ?

We also need a law against farting and chewing gum. Talk about a quick change of the regime. They would clog up the prisons to the point where we would have to release our beloved murderers and rap...never mind.

What would be the proper punishment for texting and walking ? A quick toss into a swimming pool sounds about right. We could rent the fountains in malls out to those municipalities that are broke because they threw all the tax money into building a mall that has never achieved 33% capacity. Starbucks could be the trustee.

Cant decide if this was a dig at europe/socialist countries, but not one law exists in europe against this
but new york and arkansas have been looking into it since 2007 , and im guessing that since your link was from 2008 it didnt get very far in illinois either???
I was watching "1000 ways to die the other night" and it had a story of a young couple arguing while texting, on the way to meet each other, he was driving, she was walking, The "argument " got heated (he was late or something) the closer they got to their rendezvous point, and not looking at what they were doing, and he ran her over. Apparently she died..now the truth of the story is of course questionable but a non stupid person could easily have been in the girls place.

Theres also a story recently about a mother runnning over her own child in the driveway because she was texting in the car..the poor lil girl didnt ask to have a stoopid parent.
I agree with the no texting law while driving, not the one in the OP but in reality its unenforceable, and until people learn to be smart with technology and their human limitations  its gonna be a problem.
Off to watch the dumbass in the fountain

politicians think they have to justify themselves by passing stupid, costly, liberty taking laws. Their job should be to ELIMINATE laws. Oh, and if they write a law, it would be NICE to actually READ it first. I'd put a clarity index on a law and a page limit, too.

Please consider : most Law is written by lawyers,passed by lawyers,interpreted by lawyer for lawyers....so who makes all the money?  LAWYERS
Hence why we all have so many laws,of such great complexity.

Yes we are doomed, when a poster (estring of course) post a story from 2 1/2 years ago as if it just happened yesterday.

#1, it was not about texting and walking.  It was about texting while crossing the street.  Since there have been traffic fatalities involving people walking across the street playing with their device I suspect he was just trying to protect the stupid.  Why should we, just let nature cull em out.

#2, were you just trying to provoke a response and hoping everybody was dumb enough to not notice the date or were you the one who fell into that position?

A better law would bar lawsuits from people who bump into poles while texting, or fall into fountains.

Coincidentally I was coming home from work today and some guy was texting as he was crossing the street. He tripped on the curb as he got to the other side and the phone went flying.
